World premiere of student composer and alumni saxophone collaboration performed in NYC Nov. 16.

A collaboration between two SUNY Fredonia School of Music alumni and a current student composer will culminate in a world premiere to be performed in New York City on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Jacob Swanson and Sarah Marchitelli, former students of Professor Wildy Zumwalt, will perform, “We Are Art,” a three-movement piece for soprano and alto saxophone and electronics that was written by Kate Parker, a junior composition major.

On the heels of a successful year of awards and other achievements, SUNY Fredonia’s Fredonia Radio Systems has gained national attention from the New York Times. An article focusing on college internet radio features Fredonia's all internet station WDVL 89.5 as an example of a college station using social media and other platforms to remain on the cutting edge of college broadcasting.

Up 'til Dawn has fun for good cause on Sunday

The Fredonia for St. Jude club will host its fourth annual Up ‘Til Dawn event on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 4 to 9 p.m. in Steele Hall. Up ‘Til Sawn is a letter-writing event, where participants are asked to fill pre-written donation letters for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. with the names and addresses of family and friends. The goal is to raise $25, 000 from the 10,000 pre-written letters that have been ordered. If a participant brings 50 names or more, they will be entered to win a $200 Visa gift card, and for every five letters, they will receive a raffle ticket.

Mainstage Series offers contemporary twist on ‘Macbeth’

William Shakespeare’s classic “Macbeth” opens Friday, Nov. 4 and runs through Saturday, Nov. 12 with six performances in Bartlett Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center. A modern-styled version of one of the best-known tragedies in Western drama will be the next offering in the Walter Gloor Mainstage Series by the SUNY Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance.

Hail, Freedonia! The Marx Brothers Tradition Continues...

“Freedonia Marxonia,” SUNY Fredonia’s long-standing Marx Brothers Film Festival and Symposium, returns Saturday, Nov. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the lobby of the University Commons on campus. The event is once again free and open to the public. The 2011 festival will feature Marx Brothers movies, the traditional group photo at 1:30 p.m. of all participants wearing “Groucho” glasses, followed by judging of a Marx Brothers look-alike contest and an art contest.

Pops Series to feature tribute to ABBA on Nov. 5

“ABBA-Mania” will be presented on Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall at Rockefeller Arts Center. Direct from Toronto, the group features four professional singers and a five-piece backup band that recreate the look and sound that made ABBA one of the best-known pop acts of the disco era.

Saakumu Dance Troupe giving workshops Monday, Oct. 24

The Fredonia Percussion Guild is sponsoring a two-day visit to the Fredonia School of Music by the award-winning Saakumu Dance Troupe, featuring a concert on Sunday, Oct. 23, and workshops on Monday, Oct. 24. Led by master of the Ghanaian xylophone Bernard Woma, is one of the leading traditional and contemporary dance and music groups in Ghana, West Africa.
