Bob Becker, a founding member of the percussion ensemble Nexus and a virtuoso on xylophone, marimba and tabla, will conduct two workshops and give a concert at Fredonia during a three-day visit in late January.
Students enrolled in Fredonia’s performing arts programs will have an opportunity to learn from Joseph Gifford, a renowned teacher who has worked with conductors, singers, dancers, actors and instrumentalists for more than 50 years, during “Spontaneity of the Performing Arts,” a multi-disciplinary event to be held Dec. 6 to 10.
The Musical Journeys Program will continue its 10th season of free concerts with special guest musician John Hausmann playing the sitar on Saturday Nov. 7 at the Darwin R. Barker Library in Fredonia. There will be two performances, at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., each lasting half an hour.
The Fredonia College Symphony, conducted by Dr. David Rudge and his apprentice, Hayden Denesha, celebrates Halloween with a “terrifying” music event in King Concert Hall on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m.
The Hillman Opera will present an English translation of Franz Lehár’s classic work “The Merry Widow” from Nov. 13 to 15. As is the Hillman Opera tradition, a large number of students will participate on stage, off stage, behind the stage and in the pit. Approximately 125 students will intersect with faculty in bringing this stunning production to life.
The Fredonia Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb, will present its first concert of the season on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall. The program features Mark Engebretson's Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Ensemble with guest soloist Susan Fancher, and "Hemispheres" by Joseph Turrin.
The Fredonia Wind Ensemble will welcome alumnus and U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Benjamin Albright to perform as a trumpet soloist at its concert on Thursday Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall. Staff Sgt. Albright will perform James Curnow’s “Counterpiece” and Bruce Broughton’s “Oliver’s Birthday,” while the wind ensemble will provide an evening full of wind classics and contemporary repertoire.
Rockefeller Arts Center presents one of the world’s best jazz-pop a cappella groups for its annual Christmas pops concert. “White Christmas with M-Pact” continues the DFT Communications Pops Series on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.
An adaption of an award-winning Broadway musical will open the annual Walter Gloor Mainstage Series. The Department of Theatre and Dance will present six performances of “Cabaret” from Oct. 14 to 18 in Marvel Theatre. Performances will take place Oct. 14-17 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 17-18 at 2 p.m.
Fredonia’s own talent will share the spotlight with one of the nation’s leading jazz orchestras for the opening event of the 2015-16 DFT Communications Pops Series, “An Evening of Ella and Ellington with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra” on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.
