Open Mic events for kids and adults headline Big Read POEtry Contest

Community members are invited to participate in one of two Big Read POEtry Contest Open Mic events on Oct. 14 and 15. Teen and adult poets are invited to share their poems on Oct. 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Literacy Volunteers 21 East Book Store and Café, located at 21 East Second St. in Dunkirk. Young poets are invited to share their poems on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Fredonia Farmers’ Market, located on Church St. in Fredonia.

Geoffrey Burgess here for Baroque residency

Baroque Oboist Geoffrey Burgess will be in residence at SUNY Fredonia in October to prepare music students in authentic Baroque and classical performance practices, culminating in two informal concerts which are free and open to the public. These concerts will feature students from all areas of the School of Music including voice, keyboard, string, brass and wind.

Hunt for new president begins with campus interviews by search firm

College Council Chairman Frank Pagano announced at its Sept. 28 meeting that Dr. Allen Koenig of R.H. Perry & Associates will provide executive search and recruiting services for the SUNY Fredonia Presidential Search process, now underway following the announcement of Dennis L. Hefner's intention to retire at the end of the 2011-12 academic year. The firm is on campus Oct. 12 & 13 for a pre-search study.

Former resident and novelist to speak at SUNY Fredonia

SUNY Fredonia alumna Sarie Naetzker Mackay will talk to students at her alma mater at the invitation of the English Department on Thursday, Oct. 13. The author of two historical novels will give a Craft Talk at 4 p.m. and read from her works at 7 p.m., followed by a book signing. Both events will be held in McEwen Hall Room 202. The public is invited.
