Sorel Piano Competition winners

The Fredonia School of Music has announced Jimmy Berger and Raymond Feng as the winners of the inaugural Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, held in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall on Feb. 26. Ten finalists were selected from a group of talented young pianists.

The Fredonia School of Music has invited 10 gifted, young pianists to campus to compete in the Final Round of the Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, slated to take place on Sunday, Feb. 26, beginning at noon in Rosch Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Mazzio tribute slated for Feb. 19

Fredonia School of Music bands, Trombone Choir, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia will honor the legacy of faculty member Carl V. Mazzio in a tribute concert on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. in King Concert Hall. The program will feature Mr. Mazzio's favorite wind compositions including the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saëns, “Colonial Song” by Grainger and “Danzon No. 2” by Marquez.

Connections to Earth, others highlighted in Fredonia art exhibition

For artist Sharbani Das Gupta, the connection of humans to each other and to the Earth is paramount. Her current exhibition, “Sharbani Das Gupta: Out Of Step,” which runs through Feb. 26 at the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery, is an ode to the Earth and it exemplifies her trademark themes of connectivity and environmental awareness.

Fredonia Bass Fest slated for Saturday

The second Fredonia Bass Fest, a day devoted to performances and classes for double bass players of all levels – professional, college, high school, teacher and adult learner – will be hosted by the School of Music on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Rosch Recital Hall.

Spontaneous Productions is celebrating its eighth year with another “on the fly” event. Once every semester, Spontaneous Productions recruits actors, writers, directors, and technicians who collaborate to write, rehearse, and perform original one-act plays in the span of just 24 hours.

School of Music launches Claudette Sorel Piano Competition for young pianists

The inaugural Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, an event designed to celebrate the creativity and excellence of young pianists, will be held by the School of Music in February 2017. The application deadline has been extended to Jan. 22. Named in honor of the late SUNY Distinguished Professor and Fredonia Professor Emeritus Claudette Sorel, the competition is generously supported by the Sorel Organization and offers a $2,500 cash first prize and $1,500 in additional prize money.

Fredonia opens signups for annual Bass Fest

Registration is underway for the second annual Fredonia Bass Fest on Saturday, Feb. 11, a day devoted to performances and classes for double bass players of all levels – professional, college, high school, teacher and adult learner – at the Fredonia School of Music. Also part of the event, is a double bass solo competition that will provide performance opportunities, cash prizes, scholarship money and additional prizes to high school players.

Marion Art Gallery to host student exhibition

The Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery will feature student works with a senior show titled “Taking Off” from Dec. 2 to 9. The exhibition highlights the best works by five graduating seniors in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media including Dylan Scacchetti, Alexandro Galiber, Kaitlin Padlo, Kara Koehler and Victoria DePalma.
