James Currie to give guest lecture on Puccini's style Oct. 22; Hillman Opera Scholar presentation

Guest lecturer Dr. James Currie of the University of Buffalo’s musicology faculty will open this year’s Hillman Opera activities with a presentation, “Puccini’s Late Style,” on Monday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall at SUNY Fredonia.
Dr. Currie’s book, released in August by the Indiana University Press, is entitled, Music and the Politics of Negation. He is a noted scholar in a wide variety of forums and disciplines. His work in philosophy, sociology, comparative literature, poetics, and musicology has been concerned with investigating the interactions and tensions between music, politics, and philosophy.
In addition to his scholarly research and writing, Professor Currie is a poet and performance artist.
This is the third annual Hillman Opera Scholar presentation, sponsored by the Hillman Opera and the Musicology Area of the School of Music.
The annual Hillman Opera production of Puccini’s, “Sour Angelica,” and “Gianni Schicchi” opens Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11, with a 2 p.m. matinee.
The Hillman Opera, soon to reach its 60th anniversary, is one of the most treasured and longest running traditions of SUNY Fredonia.
