Scholarships are administered by many third-party organizations to help support students who wish to study overseas. Private scholarships can be for students in specific majors or those wishing to study in certain regions of the world. Use the resources below to explore private means of funding study abroad scholarships.
Bridging Scholarship
Japan-US Friendship Commission, an independent federal agency promoting mutual understanding between the United States and Japan, in an effort to highlight public/ private partnerships and to promote study abroad in Japan by American undergraduates, initiated the Bridging Project scholarship program and established the US-Japan Bridging Foundation to accept contributions.
The Levin Institute
To improve educational cooperation and exchanges between the United States and the People’s Republic of China and to expand knowledge of China and the Chinese language among New Yorkers, the Ministry of Education of China has offered 10 full scholarships per year between 2009 and 2012 for selected SUNY undergraduate students who wish to study the Chinese language or related disciplines in China.
Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program
The Whitaker Program supports biomedical engineers (and bioengineers), from graduating seniors through post-doctorates, in conducting high-quality research or study overseas.
CIEE Bowman Travel Grants
Applicants for CIEE Bowman Travel Grants must be undergraduate students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents only) matriculated at an American college or university who will be participating in a study abroad program in one of the designated countries. Awards are issued as vouchers to Council Travel, to be exchanged for round-trip airline tickets to the program destination.
Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarships for American Minority Students
The Turkish Coalition of America is pleased to award up to 100 scholarships per year for American minority students. These scholarships are awarded to eligible U.S. citizens of African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American ethnic origin. Undergraduate and graduate level students who have been accepted to a university in Turkey or in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are welcome to apply. Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 per student.
The National Italian American Foundation
The National Italian American Foundation offers study abroad scholarships that range from $2,500 to $5,000 to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students must have a GPA of 3.25, be enrolled in an accredited university, and come from an Italian American background to be eligible for the NIAF scholarship.
Summer Scholarships to Study Spanish in Spain at the University of Málaga (2 Awards)
Two scholarships are being awarded, each for a one-month Spanish summer course at the University of Málaga (20 lessons per week). The awards include the full course cost as well as accommodation in a shared student apartment (single room). Airfare and personal spending are not included in the award. The value of each award is of 800 Euros (approximately $1,000).
