About Supplemental Instruction (SI):
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses, providing regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for all students enrolled in the course. SI sessions are facilitated by "SI Leaders" who are students who have previously and successfully completed the course.
Key Elements
- SI Targets historically difficult courses rather than "at-risk" students.
- SI Leaders do not lecture or reteach material, rather they direct collaborative learning exercises that encourage students to take responsibility for learning the course material.
- Participation is voluntary and open to all students in the course.
- SI Leaders attend all lectures for the selected course and are trained and supervised by a professional staff member.
- SI is only offered in classes in which there is support from the faculty member.
Students
Supplemental Instruction (SI) was developed by Deanna C. Martin, Ph.D. at the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 1973. Faculty and staff from over 900 institutions in the U.S. and twelve other countries have been trained to implement SI. Students who participate in SI earn higher course grades and withdraw less often than non-SI participants. Data also indicates higher re-enrollment and graduation rates.
Sessions
Students who attend SI session develop study strategies for notetaking, graphic organization, vocabulary acquisition and test preparation as they review course materials. Students have the opportunity to become actively involved with their classmates as they process the text, supplementary readings and lecture notes. SI sessions are regularly schedule throughout the semester.
