Rationale:
SUNY Fredonia has adopted these standards to formalize the university's practices related to general scholarship eligibility, awarding and renewability.

Applicability of Standard:
These standards apply to all students who are recipients of a scholarship initially awarded to them by the Office of Admissions at the time of acceptance. Students awarded a scholarship through their Academic Department/FredScholar should refer to their initial scholarship communication for their individual scholarship policy.

General Scholarship Eligibility

  • Unless specifically noted in the individual scholarship description recipients must be:
    • Matriculated in a degree program.
    • Registered full time (at least 12 credits per semester).
    • Reside in on-campus housing per semester.
    • Maintain minimum overall specified GPA as listed on your scholarship award letter each semester.
    • Fall semester freshman must meet academic (GPA) eligibility for the specific scholarship by the end of the spring semester and at the end of every semester thereafter. There is no GPA review at the conclusion of the student’s first semester.
    • Complete the FAFSA form annually (excluding international students).
    • Complete the NYS TAP Application annually (for New York State Residents only).
    • Meet SUNY Fredonia's Code of Conduct.
  • Scholarships are designated towards Fall and Spring semesters only.
  • All awards are subject to available funding levels, which may change during an award year.
  • Scholarships are awarded through various campus departments and offices. In most cases, eligibility is determined from institutional data contained in admission records, financial aid records, and academic records. With the exception of FREDScholar, where students can answer various questions to 'apply' for more scholarship opportunities.
  • The award process occurs throughout the year.

Renewability

  • Continuing students receiving renewable scholarships must meet academic renewal eligibility criteria for the specific scholarship as notated in their initial scholarship award letter at the end of each academic semester.
  • First-year students receiving renewable scholarships must meet all renewal requirements each semester, with the exception of GPA requirements as listed on the initial scholarship award letter. GPA requirements for first-year students will be reviewed at the end of the academic year.
  • If you meet your specific scholarship renewal criteria, it will automatically be renewed.
    • First-Year Students will receive a maximum of 8 semesters
    • Transfer Students will receive a maximum of 6 semesters
  • If a student loses eligibility for a semester, they are not automatically entitled to receive the scholarship they were initially awarded for any future semester.
  • Cumulative institutional GPAs are based on a 4.0 scale and including credits only taken at SUNY Fredonia through the last completed semester.

Loss Of Eligibility & Requests for Reinstatement

  • It is the recipient’s responsibility to be familiar with the terms and conditions and scholarship policy as explained on this page, as well as on their individual Admissions Scholarship award letter(s). Recipients will not receive warnings or notifications for failing to meet terms and conditions. We review terms and conditions on a semesterly basis.
  • Discovery of a recipient's failure to meet terms and conditions will not occur immediately, and may, in fact, occur after the recipient benefits in some way (billing deferral, disbursement, refunds, etc.). The timing of discovery does not affect eligibility or constitute eligibility. SUNY Fredonia reserves the right to cancel any scholarship at such time the discovery is made regardless of timing.
  • Students who withdraw or take a leave of absence before the published date each semester at which time a student incurs full tuition liability lose scholarship funding.
  • Students who withdraw or take a leave of absence after that date will retain scholarship funding for that semester.
  • Students may request for the scholarship to be reinstated once they have fulfilled the requirements again after losing due to failing to meet their scholarship requirements as specified in their scholarship award letter and/or returning after a separation from the University. To begin the request, please log in to StudentForms to complete a Scholarship Request for Reinstatement to be reviewed by the Financial Aid Office.
  • Students will not be eligible for scholarship renewal if they have withdrawn from SUNY Fredonia and attended a different institution prior to re-enrolling.
    • The decision of the Financial Aid Office upon review of the Scholarship Request for Reinstatement is final.
    • All successful Scholarship Requests for Reinstatements are subject to funding availability at the time of request.
    • All Scholarship Requests for Reinstatement must be completed before the Final Day to ADD a Course without penalty for the semester in which you are requesting the scholarship to be reinstated.  If the request is not submitted by that semester’s deadline, then the student forfeits the request for reinstatement for that semester and must submit a new Scholarship Request for Reinstatement in StudentForms during the next semesters application timeline.
  • It will be the student's responsibility to ensure they file a Scholarship Request for Reinstatement for the semester in which they have regained eligibility by the deadline.  There will be no reinstatement of scholarships for previous semesters in which students failed to complete the Scholarship Request for Reinstatement.
  • Students who do not reside in on-campus housing due to participation in a sanctioned academic experience (for example: study abroad, internship, student teaching, clinical placement, research) will not be eligible for the scholarship for the semester in which they do not meet this renewal requirement.  Once a student regains eligibility for a future semester it will be their responsibility to submit a Scholarship Request for Reinstatement through StudentForms by the deadline for the semester in which they have regained eligibility and are requesting their scholarship to be reinstated for.
