Jeffrey D. Corcoran of Ballston Lake, N.Y., has been named director of the SUNY Fredonia High Technology Incubator in Dunkirk, N.Y. He is responsible for all aspects of operating the facility, which was created last year with funding from New York State, SUNY, and New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR). The incubator is in the design phase and is expected to be built in 2008. Meanwhile, temporary office space has been established in downtown Dunkirk’s Empire Zone and incubator space will be opening shortly. Mr. Corcoran took charge April 2 at offices in the Stearns Building on Central Avenue, and is already involved in developing strategic plans and marketing for the facility

Ready for the Fashion Show. “The World, the Society, and My Reflection … the Person in the Mirror” is the theme the 2007 People of Color Concerns Conference, sponsored by the SUNY Fredonia Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos, and the Alumni Office. The Black Student Union Fashion Show, a 31-year tradition at Fredonia, is a feature of the conference. It takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center. Boyce Watkins, an author; John Elmore, a Buffalo attorney; and Pastor Roderick L. Hennings, of Zion Dominion World Ministries, Buffalo, are key presenters. Various community leaders, SUNY Fredonia officials and Fredonia BSU alumni will also participate in the two-day conference.
The Musical Journeys Program of the Fredonia School of Music has launched a new series of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children. Selected student ensembles from the Fredonia School of Music will perform four, half-hour Children’s Concerts on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. concluding on April 28 in the multi-purpose room of the Chautauqua County Home, 10836 Temple Road in Dunkirk.
On your mark, get set … go! That’s the call runners can expect to hear at the Franklin B. Krohn 5K Memorial Run, which steps off at SUNY Fredonia’s main entrance on Central Avenue on Sunday, April 15, at noon.
The Chautauqua League of Women Voters is sponsoring a panel discussion on the media's use of the Internet for presenting news and engaging new audiences. "Blogs, Wikis, and Newsfeeds: The Internet and Other Media," will be held Monday, April 16, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the SUNY Fredonia Williams Center, Room S104. The program is free, open to all, and includes dessert.
Free testing for hearing, speech-language and vision for all ages will be offered to the public on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. until noon at SUNY Fredonia. In addition, testing for ambliopia (lazy-eye in children) will be offered to young children. Individuals and parents are encouraged to attend the free testing service if they have any concerns about their own or a family member’s speech-language, hearing or vision.
A vision to improve science, technology, engineering education in the United States will outlined by Dr. Osman Yasar, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor at College at Brockport, at talk he will deliver Friday, April 13, 4 p.m. at SUNY Fredonia in 101 Fenton Hall. All are welcome to attend. The computer science department is sponsoring the event.
Dr. Vandana Shiva, a physicist, activist and writer, will deliver a lecture Tuesday, April 10, at 5 p.m. at W101 Thompson Hall. Informal meetings with students and faculty are also planned during her day-long visit to the SUNY Fredonia campus. Following her lecture at Thompson Hall, Dr. Shiva will host a question-and-answer session, 5:45 to 6 p.m. A book-signing/reception follows from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. in Café G at the Williams Center. Her itinerary also includes attending the WOST 301 Feminist Theory class taught by Dr. Adrienne McCormick that morning and meeting with women’s studies students and faculty in the afternoon.
