The entirely voluntary initiative — believed to be the first of its kind in the U.S. — is designed to raise awareness of the numerous global problems which plastic bags cause. These include the needless death of close to one billion animals, birds and fish each year, as well as the serious, trickle-down health issues these non-degradable products can have on humans who ingest contaminated plants and animals, caused by the toxin polyethylene which plastic bags emit into soil and waterways, and ultimately becomes part of the food chain.
SUNY Fredonia’s volunteer impact throughout Chautauqua County is well known, with approximately 13,000 student volunteer hours contributed annually. Now, thanks to the creation of the Fredonia Academic Community Engagement (FACE) Center, traditional volunteering at SUNY Fredonia is poised to evolve into more strategic, long-lasting and meaningful experiences for both students and community members alike.
After 10 weeks of competing to reduce, reuse, and recycle, in the 2009 RecycleMania event, SUNY Fredonia generated nearly 72,000 pounds of recycled materials.
Area residents will have the opportunity to clear out unwanted household electric items during SUNY Fredonia’s second annual Earth Week Campus and Community Household Electric Recycling Day on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
To accommodate different interests and schedules, the outdoor activities will be held on four different days during Earth Week. Led by both science and literature professors, they will feature nature walks on campus, a trip to the College Lodge, and opportunities to “get your hands dirty” by planting native plants and weeding out invasive species.
