History department holding conference on religion this weekend

The Department of History at SUNY Fredonia is hosting the conference, "Shifting Paradigms in Religious Studies: History, Culture, and Practice," on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13. In keeping with SUNY Fredonia's 2012-2013 Convocation Theme, "Time for Change: Shifting Paradigms, Creating Possibilities," the conference will highlight new work being done in religious studies in both western and non-western contexts.

Syracuse columnist Kirst, '81, to headline journalism conference

Sean Kirst, an award-winning columnist with The (Syracuse) Post-Standard and 1981 graduate of SUNY Fredonia, will deliver the keynote address at the Society of Professional Journalists Annual Conference on Saturday, April 6, at SUNY Fredonia. Leading news professionals from WNY will conduct individual break-out sessions at 11 a.m. and noon at Jewett Hall. They include: Bruce Andriatch, assistant managing editor/features at The Buffalo News; Julia Burke, associate editor, Buffalo Spree Magazine; Steve Cichon, news director, WBEN-AM radio; Fredonia alumnus Matt Gould, '95, television director, Buffalo Sabres; and Fredonia alumnus Jeff Woodard, '95, news director at WGRZ-TV, Buffalo;

SUNY Fredonia hosts Oren Lyons, key spokesman for Indigenous people

Oren Lyons, one of the most highly revered leaders and speakers for Indigenous people throughout the world, will give three presentations at SUNY Fredonia, culminating with the evening discussion “The Nature of Nature: Respecting the Cosmos” that he will lead, on Friday, April 5. Lyons will speak about the Haudenosaunee perspective of environmental sustainability, the importance of living in harmony with nature and how everything is connected at a 7 p.m. talk in Room 204 of the Williams Center.

Economist to speak at business ethics series

Dr. Mark White, chair of the Department of Political Science, Economics and Philosophy at CUNY Staten Island, will speak on Tuesday, April 9, as part of the Department of Business Administration’s 2012-13 Business Ethics Lecture Series.

Achieving fitness, wellness in busy lifestyles topic of women's program

Working women who are finding it increasingly difficult to “have it all” are invited to attend “Fit, Well and Working,” the 2013 Spring Program of the Council for Women’s Concerns, on Wednesday, April 10, at 10 a.m. at the Bob Steele Multipurpose Room. Penny Hite, chair of the Department of Sports Management and Exercise Science SUNY Fredonia, will serve as the principal speaker.

International students to be focus of April 3 'Brown Bag' talk

Student perspectives in higher education from an international viewpoint will be featured at the next College of Arts and Sciences Brown Bag Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 3, at noon at S204 Williams Center. Six international students – Fawaz Alrouqi, of Saudi Arabia; Gyu Eun Bark and Seungju Lee, Korea; Daniel Palm, Sweden; Meera Sinroja, India; and, Hiroshi Tominaga, Japan – will share their experiences at SUNY Fredonia and how they compare to college life in their home countries. Dr. Jack Croxton of the Department of Psychology, will moderate the panel.

'Seeds of Change,' global climate crisis exhibit, in Reed

The opening reception for “Seeds of Change,” a Buddhist exhibit that advocates education, personal empowerment and local initiatives to resolve global environmental problems, will be held on Sunday, April 7, at SUNY Fredonia’s Reed Library. The exhibit’s 16 colorful panels feature the works of environmental activists, such as Wangari Maathai, whose Green Belt Movement to reforest parts of Kenya evolved into a global initiative that has inspired hundreds of local women’s groups to plant over 20 million trees in deforested areas of the world.

World Travel Series film looks behind the veil of Burma

Rockefeller Arts Center presents “Burma: Reflections on a Hidden Land.” This World Travel Series film will be screened on Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall. Filmmaker Sean Cassidy will personally present the work he created with Patricia Keith. In addition to highlighting the culture and the people of Burma (also known as Myanmar), the film also helps viewers better understand a sometimes troubling truth that reside beneath the surface of a tourist-ready veneer promoted by the country’s military regime.
