The Musical Journeys Program of the School of Music announces that online registration is now available for Pathways to Music – classes for children ages 6 months through 5 years old. Established in 2010, Pathways to Music offers an exciting opportunity for children and parents to discover the joy of music while singing, moving, listening, dancing and playing.
Six-time Emmy Award winner and composer Gary Kuo, guest composer and conductor Nick DiBerardino and guest conductor Tiv Cumberbatch will be featured at “Be Our Guest,” a Fredonia Concert Band performance on March 7 featuring the composers’ works. School of Music Associate Professor Marc Guy will be horn soloist.
The Fredonia Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Paula Holcomb, will present a concert in King Concert Hall in the Rockefeller Arts Center on Sunday, March 4, at 4 p.m. The concert is free and open to all students, faculty/staff and general public. The group will be joined by Fredonia Concerto Competition winner and clarinetist Guangzhao Huang.
Saxophonist Jeff Humphrey, ’15, will present a recital with School of Music pianist I-Fei Chen on Thursday, March 29, at 6 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall. He will be joined by saxophonist Dr. Lawrence Gwozdz, ’75. In addition, Dr. Gwozdz will present a master class in Diers Recital Hall on March 28 at 4 p.m.
Recognizing that jazz is both a spontaneous and a social music, the newly formed Fredonia Faculty Jazz Collective is launching a string of open rehearsals at Fredonia and inviting the campus and surrounding community to experience this uniquely American music at its core.The first open rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, March 6, at 1 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. Sessions are scheduled on March 20 and 27, with additional rehearsals, also Tuesdays, to be arranged in April. All sessions are free and open to the public.
In what is sure to be a terrific event, the Intercollegiate Choral Festival is slated for Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m., in King Concert Hall. Gregory R. Gentry, director of Choral Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will serve as festival clinician and conductor.
The Western New York Chamber Orchestra will present its Classics #3 "The Musical Life of Haydn" on Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo and at King Concert Hall on campus on Sunday, April 15, at 4 p.m. The concert will feature Haydn's Symphony No.44 "Farewell" and the "Theresien Mass" with the Fredonia Masterworks Choir and School of Music Voice faculty.
The School of Music will present Tetraphonics, an acclaimed saxophone quartet from Germany, on Saturday, March 3, at 8 p.m., in Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall. The program will feature original pieces by Sally Beamish, Stephen Dankner, and an American premiere by Olga Kroupova. Mozart’s music will also be performed in two transcriptions arranged by quartet member Steffen Hass.
A musical that offers a powerful and frank look at the journey from adolescence to adulthood is the next offering in the Walter Gloor Mainstage Series. The Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance will present six performances of the rock musical “Spring Awakening” from April 6 to 14.
The School of Music is hosting “Harp Day” on Sunday, May 6, a “no-stress, informal event" open to harpists of any age and any level. Musicians are invited to bring their harp for a day filled with ensemble rehearsals, camaraderie, and a recital by American Harp Society National Competition winner Natalie Severson.
