The Fredonia School of Music will host its first annual Fall String Festival, a one-day residency with four world renowned artists in recital and master classes on Sunday, Oct. 30. The festival begins at 2 p.m. when Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Concertmaster Dennis Kim takes the stage at Rosch Recital Hall for a performance with fellow guest artists Dr. Elias Goldstein, viola; cellist Steven Doane and bassist Jeffrey Turner.
Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix ̶ and the revolutionary style he forged during the turbulent 1960s ̶ will be explored at a lecture/demonstration on Saturday, Nov. 5, by Dr. Thomas Millioto, a Fredonia graduate who teaches and performs in New York City.
Two School of Music alumni, soprano Johanna Moffit, ’06, and pianist James Welch, ’03, who is also a member of the School of Music faculty, will present a recital that will include several Puccini arias, Samuel Barber’s “Hermit Songs” and many other favorites on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.
Rockefeller Arts Center presents an evening of Grammy Award-winning rock ’n’ roll featuring the piano stylings of Elton John and Billy Joel to kick off the 2016-17 DFT Communications Pops Series with“Piano Men: A Tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel” on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.
Students of all ages as well as adults can learn fundamentals of theatre from professional instructors at the Playground Academy, a client of the Fredonia Technology Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk. In addition to creating dramatic characters, adults can attend Zumba classes held throughout the week.
As Fredonia gears up for the much-anticipated Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 21 to 23, the School of Music is preparing to welcome a special group of alumni who are returning for a reunion concert unlike any other in recent memory, the College Symphony Orchestra Alumni Concert.
Renowned jazz saxophonist Bobby Militello, a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the Maynard Ferguson Band in a distinguished career spanning 50 years, will give a master class on Monday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall. The class is free and open to the public.
Sixteen students from the School of Music have been chosen to perform alongside The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus in a free concert on Monday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall. The same day, Cantare, an educational outreach group within the Soldiers’ Chorus, will present a program of opera scenes at noon in Rosch Recital Hall.
On Friday, Oct. 21, from 9 to 10 a.m., Dr. Allan Dennis, who will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from the university and the Fredonia Alumni Association during Homecoming, will meet with School of Music students to discuss entrepreneurial artists' ventures.
Several members of the School of Music faculty and guest artists will present an eclectic series of concerts in Rosch Recital Hall during September that are free and open to the campus and community.
