The Hillman Opera, produced each year by the Fredonia School of Music in conjunction with the Hillman Memorial Music Association, is breaking new ground this year with a unique production in an online format. The production of “Beatrice and Benedict” will be available starting Nov. 27 on the School of Music’s YouTube channel, noted opera producer and Fredonia alumnus Dr. Robert Strauss of the School of Music.
The National Opera Association announced that Fredonia’s 2019 Hillman Opera production of “Cendrillion” by Jules Massenet, with the libretto by Henri Cain, has earned First Place in Division III of the association’s annual opera production competition. A total of 12 awards were presented to productions at colleges and universities nationwide.

Robert E. Coon, a longtime administrator at Fredonia and former president of the Hillman Memorial Music Association Board of Directors, received the Jessie Hillman Award for Excellence at a ceremony held on Wednesday, June 19, at Shorewood Country Club.
“Don Giovanni,” one of the most widely produced operas, will be presented by the Hillman Memorial Music Association, in collaboration with Fredonia’s School of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance, at Marvel Theatre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9, 10 and 11.
Fredonia alumna and Professor Julie L. Newell of the School of Music has been selected to receive the Jessie Hillman Award for Excellence.
