Smith documentary ‘Among the Hemlocks’ to be screened in India film festival
“Among the Hemlocks: Fantastic Stories from Fredonia, NY,” a documentary produced and directed by Roslin Smith, assistant professor of Communication, will be screened at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival in Mumbai, India on Feb. 20.
Fredonia welcomes formal Exercise Science major
High school students aspiring to work in the growing health professions field have an attractive option at Fredonia following formal approval of its B.S. in Exercise Science degree by the New York State Education Department and the State University of New York.
Diversity education initiative launched
The new Facilitators Re-imagining Equity and Diversity (FRED) Initiative was launched at Fredonia the weekend of Jan. 12. Seventeen participants including faculty, staff, and students participated in a Train-the-Trainer program led by consultants from the Blue Door Group.

The 1984 comedy film “Revenge of the Nerds” will be shown as part of the Convocation film series “Ivory Tower Misfits: Images of Higher Education and College Professors in Hollywood Films” on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7.30 p.m., in the Williams Center Room S204.
History professor organizes international conference in Shanghai
Xin Fan, assistant professor of History, received funding support and organized an international workshop on case studies and historical theories in Shanghai, China, on Dec. 19 and 20, 2018. The effort was part of his appointment as a fellow at the International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization at Fudan University during the summer of 2018.
McFall co-authors articles that examine ‘emerging adulthood’ concept
Department of Psychology Associate Professor Joseph McFall and five co-authors had two papers published in the journal Emerging Adulthood and a dataset published in the Journal of Open Psychology Data. Their project resulted from a national collaborative project to advance the understanding of the concept of “emerging adulthood.”
Fredonia students receive Gilman Scholarships
Two Fredonia students have been awarded 2019 Gilman Scholarships to support study abroad experiences during the spring and summer semesters. Seventeen Fredonia students have received Gilman grants, totaling more than $50,000, since 2015.
Denton, Creeley publish study in Women & Birth
Drs. Lisa Denton and Caty Creeley, of the Department of Psychology, collaborated on a research project, whose results were recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Women & Birth.
Fredonia implements accelerated program leading to M.S. in Education
The path for students who want to become elementary teachers with additional certifications in special education and literacy has been shortened and some of their tuition expenses lowered, thanks to a program recently approved by the New York State Education Department. Highly motivated students seeking New York state certification in this field can earn a B.S and M.S in Education in five years.
