Fredonia scored the first six goals of the second half Tuesday to pull away from Rowan in non-conference women's lacrosse. The Blue Devils improve to 3-1 this spring with the 14-8 win at the National Training Center.
Four track and field school records were broken on the first day of competition at Boston University. One men's record and three women's records now have new ownership.
The Fredonia women's swimming and diving team is on a three-win streak heading into SUNYACs, after beating Cortland this past weekend. Diver Meghan Bartlett (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) earned zone-qualifying scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, finishing first in the 3-meter and second in the 1-meter.
Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) and Zakk Hess (Newark, N.Y./North Rose - Wolcott), after breaking their own school records on March 7, have qualified for a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships on March 13 and 14 at Roanoke College in Salem, Va.
Bobby Cooper (Macedon, N.Y. / Gananda) won the 800-meter run Saturday with a time of 1:59.06 as the Fredonia Blue Devil men's track and field team finished third in team points at the Brockport Mid-Season Classic. Cooper's time was a personal-best. The Fredonia distance runners also finished 1-2-3 in the 1-mile run.
The Fredonia women's lacrosse team couldn't put the finishing touches on a chance to take down one of the top teams in NCAA Division III lacrosse. The No. 6 Cortland Red Dragons, winners of the SUNYAC for the past 16 years, defeated the Blue Devils, 14-10.
Courtney and Rachel Poirier share a unique bond — so unique, that sometimes it’s unrecognizable. The Poiriers are among five sets of twins who enrolled at Fredonia last fall. Those numbers are consistent with most years, meaning at any one time there are upwards of 20 sets on campus. While there are no hard figures to prove it, sisters have a tendency to go to college together more so than brothers — and not just twins. In 2014-15 alone, there are four sister-sister combinations on Blue Devil teams.
Fredonia's Nicole Desens (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Kristen Sawyer (Lockport, N.Y.) won events to lead the Blue Devils to a sixth-place finish at the RIT Tigers Invitational at the Gordon Fieldhouse. Desens, a senior, won the women's shot put with a personal best which is ranked third best on the Fredonia women's indoor performance list. Sawyer, a freshman, finished first in the pole vault, by clearing 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches).
The Fredonia men's and women's basketball team play host to local SUNYAC rival SUNY Buffalo State on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The matchup will be a continuation of the first annual "Battle by the Lake" competition between the two schools.The contest is also marked as an Athletes Supporting Athletes Day by the Fredonia athletic department. All Fredonia student athletes are encouraged to go and wear blue to support the home team.
The Fredonia women's basketball team made it a clean sweep of the North Country this season after defeating Plattsburgh in a nail-biting contest, 70-64, on Jan. 31. The Devils posted wins in all four games against SUNYAC foes Plattsburgh and Potsdam this season and improved to 5-7 in conference play.
