The annual “Pink the Rink” hockey game is slated for Friday, Feb. 6 in the Steele Hall Arena. It is the ninth year the team has held the “Pink The Rink” game. The Blue Devils have raised over $50,000 in jersey sales since the inception of the event. Presale tickets will be available at the Athletics and Recreation Department office, located at 120 Dods Hall, beginning Feb. 4.
Fredonia students will be able to show their support for National Girls and Women in Sports Day and female student-athletes by donning commemorative t-shirts at the Blue Devils’ basketball doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Jan. 24, and the following week on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
The Fredonia Blue Devils are ranked No. 18 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Women's Division III Preseason Top 20 released on Jan. 12.Coming off a 12-7 season culminating in a second NCAA Tournament appearance, the Blue Devils will begin their quest for a third national trip when they play host to Wooster on Feb. 28.
The Fredonia women's basketball team used a double-double from sophomore Jamie Curry to down the Medaille Mavericks, 60-57, on Saturday. She accounted for 11 points and 11 rebounds. Curry was supported by freshman Jacque Law with 14 points off the bench, and 10 points from junior Sabrina Macaulay.
Registration for Fredonia Blue Devils' Basketball Skills Clinic is now being taken. Open to boys and girls grades 4 through 6, the clinic is scheduled for Jan. 18 at Steele Hall Fieldhouse from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Men's basketball coach Philip Seymore, members of his coaching staff, and select players will serve as instructors.
Highly decorated women's soccer player Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) has been selected to the 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Women's All-East Region team, her third post-season soccer award this year. Kleine, a senior midfielder, had seven goals and four assists for 18 points in 2014, thus earning Second Team regional honors for the second time.
The Fredonia women's volleyball team had three players ranked among the Top 100 nationally in NCAA Division III statistical categories during the 2014 season. Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y. /West Seneca East), Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena), and Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y. /St. Mary's of Lancaster) are listed in seven different categories in the final NCAA D-III lists.
On Dec. 8 SUNYAC named two Fredonia men as the top swimmers and divers from the past week. It was a repeat selection for each. Freshman freestyle-butterfly specialist Jake Hewitt (Duansburg, N.Y./Schalmont) was named Male Swimmer of the Week. Sophomore diver Jeff Matter (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) claimed the Male Diver of the Week award.
One day after finishing second in one race, Fredonia senior Zakk Hess (Newark, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) was back at it again Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Golden Flash Gala track and field meet hosted by Kent State. Hess finished second Friday in the 5,000 meters and won the 3,000 meters Saturday with a time of 8:40.87. His time Saturday and his 5K time Friday of 15:01.44 are his collegiate-bests.
Fredonia freshman Kristen Sawyer (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) set a school women's indoor pole vault record Friday, Dec. 5, at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. Competing in her first collegiate meet, Sawyer cleared 3.46 meters -- 11 feet, 4 1/4 inches -- to eclipse the previous school record of 10 feet, 8 inches set by Chelsea Caruso in 2011. Sawyer finish tied for second in the unseeded division of the meet.
