The Alice M. Sam Biology Scholarship

Major Alice M. Sam was a retired member of the United States Air Force Nurses Corp. She was decorated for meritorious service for her air evacuation duty at Yokota Air Base, Japan. She was also the recipient of the US Air Force Commendation Medal and other awards. Her tours of duty included Japan, Okinawa, Vietnam, Korea, Ohio and the USAF Clinic at Grisson AFB, Indiana, where she served as Chairperson of Nursing Services. She was a member of the Air Force Association, Aerospace Medical Association, Critical Care Nurses Association and American Heart Association. Major Sam earned her B.A. degree from Stephens College, Columbia, MO and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, PA. This scholarship was established by Major Sam’s sister, Adele R. Sam. In naming the scholarship for her sister, Ms. Sam honors, in perpetuity, the contributions made to medicine and the personalization of patient care as exemplified by Major Alice Sam.

Candidates for this scholarship must be planning a career in medicine or medical research.
