Bruce and Nancy Garlapow Memorial Scholarship.
The Bruce and Nancy Garlapow Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Bruce Garlapow, a 1974 Fredonia Biology graduate, and his wife Nancy Kulick Garlapow, a 1975 Fredonia Sociology graduate. The scholarship is supported by various benefactors.
The award is given to incoming freshmen students expressing career interests in environmental sciences or biology.
Herbert Clark Mackie and Marion C. Mackie Memorial Award.
Herbert Clark Mackie graduated from Fredonia Normal School in 1928 and was a teacher at the School for 28 years. He and his wife Marion evidenced a firm and deep commitment to assisting students in their personal needs and professional pursuits. This endowment was established in 1999 by Lyle H. and Margaret Bailey Hemink, both graduates of Fredonia.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a junior or senior year student majoring in environmental sciences or an elementary/secondary education student with a concentration in environmental and/or natural sciences who demonstrate strong scholarship and a financial need; and /or any student who may be inclined to use Mackie Camp as a field of study center or laboratory for specific ecological efforts; New York State residents preferred.
Stavrides Award for Outdoor Interests (Natural Environment)
A 1946 graduate of Fredonia and a recipient of an MLA degree from Stony Brook University, Marie Stavrides had a meaningful and distinguished career as an elementary school educator. While at Fredonia, Marie was inspired by Dr. Stanley’s outdoor education field biology course. She had a broad interest in preserving the natural environment and perpetuating individual involvement in the outdoors.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a sophomore, junior or senior, or graduate student who exhibits passion/enthusiasm for the environment and has shown interest in gaining knowledge and/or sharing knowledge regarding the outdoors. This includes interest in the area of environmental protection, plants, woods, animals, mountain climbing, hunting, fishing, forest management and biology/botany research.
Willard F. Stanley Memorial Scholarship.
Dr. Stanley served Fredonia as the Chair of Sciences, Chair of Biology and Professor of Biology from 1935 until his retirement in 1970. Prior to his Fredonia tenure, Dr. Stanley served as Professor and Chair of Biology at Minot State Teachers College in North Dakota. He received his BA degree in 1927 from North Central College and his PhD degree in 1932 from the University of Illinois. Dr. Stanley was well known for his research on local fauna and flora with emphasis on ornithology, and was a highly respected and beloved faculty member at Fredonia.
These scholarships are given to students majoring in environmental/field biology or ecology who are strong scholars and active contributors to the department.
