Nefin Dinc, a documentary filmmaker and communications professor at SUNY Fredonia, has been invited and will receive a stipend to join “World War I in the Middle East,” a month-long seminar sponsored by the National Endowment of Humanities, at American University this summer.
Continuing this year’s convocation theme, “Taking Risks: Rewards and Repercussions,” SUNY Fredonia will present, “Strategic Science: Risk to the Man, Reward to Society,” Thursday, April 19, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in 101 Jewett Hall. The evening will begin with a presentation from Dr. Bernard Weiss, who has conducted research on the effects of chemical toxicity in developmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Andrew Moon, visiting professor at the University of Missouri, will deliver a research talk, “A New Evil Demon Problem for Internalism,” on Thursday, April 12, at 5 p.m., at 105 Fenton. His introductory talk, “How to Respond to Religious Disagreement,” will be given Friday, April 13, also at 105 Fenton. Epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of religion and ethics comprise Moon’s research areas.
The role of historical memory in the formulation of collective identities in contemporary post-Holocaust/post-communist Poland and Germany will be shared by Dr. Linda Czuba Brigance at the International Brown Bag Luncheon Monday, April 2, noon, at 127 Fenton (English Reading Room).
Laura Deen Johnson, assistant professor of communications, was a guest speaker at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, where she addressed the topic, "Expressions of Civil Region in Post 9-11 America." The multi-media presentation took place March 12 at the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center.
The four-day, northeast regional event culminated in a Gala Concert featuring the festival's strongest works, including Fredonia Dance Ensemble's "Embodying," choreographed by Professor Sam Kenney and part of the program for the group's spring concert on campus March 23-25.
The keynote address by William Gleason, English professor and head of the Program in American Studies at Princeton University, opens The American Play Ethic symposium on Thursday, 4:30 p.m., in 209 McEwen. Leisure, play and gaming activities that continue to shape and define the American identify and culture will be examined at SUNY Fredonia by students and faculty at the American Studies Spring Symposium on Thursday and Friday, March 22 and 23.
Music Education faculty members Christian Bernhard and Jill Reese have been invited to participate in the National Association for Music Education’s Biennial Conference in St. Louis on March 28-31.
State University of New York Athletic Conference Commissioner Patrick R. Damore has announced he will retire from his position at the end of his current contract which concludes June 30. Dr. Damore has served as the first, and only, commissioner in the history of the conference.
The Arts and Sciences Brown Bag Series continues Wednesday, March 7, with a panel on “Risks, Rewards and Repercussions,” held in conjunction with SUNY Fredonia’s 2011-12 Convocation theme. Presenters will include: Jack Croxton, Ph.D., psychology, who will moderate; Dean Russell Boisjoly, Ph.D., business; Bill Brown, Ph.D., biology; and, Robert Rogers, mathematical sciences. It all starts at noon in the Horizon Room in the lower level of the Williams Center.
