Pre-health professionals discover challenges of aiding the visually impaired

Fourteen students, all members of the new Health Professions Club at SUNY Fredonia, functioned as “sighted guides” for Dining in the Dark, an annual event held by CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services of Jamestown to raise money and increase community awareness of the myriad challenges — both big and small — that visually impaired people face in their everyday lives.

Ralph J. Blasting appointed dean of new College of Visual and Performing Arts

On July 1, SUNY Fredonia will officially open its new College of Visual and Performing Arts, formally combining its world-renowned School of Music with its strong departments of Theatre and Dance, and Visual Arts and New Media, as well as the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center. Today, the university named Dr. Ralph J. Blasting as its founding dean.

New confocal microscope in Biology Department sees inside cells, enables 3D imaging

The Leica Microsystems SP8 Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope takes images of structures inside of cells with exceptional clarity. “It is analogous to an MRI that is used in medicine which allows you to see inside the body, but instead of using magnetic resonance the confocal allow us to take ‘optical sections’ through a specimen,” said Dr. Scott Ferguson.

Showcase of student art in Marion Art Gallery

“Fredonia Showcase,” art works by students from the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at SUNY Fredonia, is the current exhibit in the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery at Rockefeller Arts Center. The show runs through Sunday, March 3. Gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday; 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Technology Incubator Business selected as Top 100 university startup

The Center for Sports Skill Measurement & Improvement, LLC (Center for Sports), a tenant of the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, was recently named by the National Center for Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer (NCET2) as a Top 100 University Startup. As a result of the honor, CEO Kevin Morse has been invited to attend NCET2’s national conference, sponsored by the National Association of Venture Capital and held in Washington, D.C., in March. Final scoring of all the nominated companies will be available in early March.

Film series continues with "Blazing Saddles" as it explores myths

The American Studies Film Series at SUNY Fredonia will examine “Myths of the American West” through the presentation of six influential films that span seven decades of filmmaking. A faculty member representing a different discipline will give an introductory talk before each screening. All films start at 7 p.m. in Fenton 105, and are free and open to the public.

Technology Incubator hosts Certified Lean professional course

As part of a partnership with University at Buffalo’s TCIE (formerly The Center for Industrial Effectiveness), the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator at 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk, NY, will once again host the Certified Lean Professional (CLP) course during spring 2013 and offer three new courses.

Stroke and head injury survivors invited to support group meetings at Youngerman Center

The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders will be offering support group meetings for stroke and head injury survivors and family members on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. in Room W118 Thompson Hall unless otherwise stated. A typical group meeting will include activities to help stroke and head injury survivors use strategies to improve communication skills, provide educational information and an opportunity to socialize and share experiences.

NEA gives funding to Reed Library for "Call of the Wild" winter project

Reed Library has been selected by the NEA to receive a Big Read grant for the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Big Read “Wild” Winter project. This year’s Big Read novel is Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild.” The $15,000 grant helps sponsor programs designed for community involvement such as lectures, book distribution and a number of activities, all which are free and open to the public.
