Ted Steinberg article says medieval poetry shows more tolerance between Arabs and Jews
Steinberg recommends including medieval Jewish and Arabic poetry in courses on medieval literature, in part to illustrate moments of intercultural and interfaith exchange during the Middle Ages.These serve as models for forging cultural connections today.
Bill Brown named Kasling Lecturer and Tim Frerichs selected for Hagan Award
Gary Lash, chair of the Kasling Memorial Lecture Committee, announced that Dr. William Brown of the Department of Biology has been selected to present the 2013 Kasling Memorial Lecture, and Associate Professor Tim Frerichs of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 William T. Hagan Young Scholar/Artist Award.
McCormick, McVicker and Hamilton to present papers at Literary London conference
English department faculty Adrienne McCormick, Jeanette McVicker and Katrina Hamilton will present papers during a panel titled, “Mapping London: Englishness and Otherness in Literary, Journalistic, and Filmic Narratives," at the Annual Literary London Conference at the University of London July 17 to 19. The conference theme is “London in Crisis and Disorder."
English faculty to read 'Bedtime Stories' Wednesday night in Reed

David Kinkela, associate professor of History and director of the Honors Program, is one of three editors of the new book, "Nation-States and the Global Environment: New Approaches to International Environmental History,” published by Oxford University Press.
Nefin Dink's new film garners Istanbul Film Festival award
“The Memoirs of Antoine Kope,” a documentary film project now under development by SUNY Fredonia Film professor Nefin Dinc, received the Binger Lab Award at the Istanbul Film Festival. The film will be based on the memoirs of an Austro-Hungarian foot soldier stationed in Istanbul during World War I and was one of 12 projects – selected from among 159 applications – to be presented during a two-day workshop before an international jury at the festival held April 5-12. The film will be released during the centennial of the “Great War.”
History department holding conference on religion this weekend
The Department of History at SUNY Fredonia is hosting the conference, "Shifting Paradigms in Religious Studies: History, Culture, and Practice," on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13. In keeping with SUNY Fredonia's 2012-2013 Convocation Theme, "Time for Change: Shifting Paradigms, Creating Possibilities," the conference will highlight new work being done in religious studies in both western and non-western contexts.
President's Awards for Excellence Luncheon set April 23
The 14th annual President’s Awards for Excellence and Service Recognition Luncheon -- and first under Virginia Horvath -- will be held on Tuesday, April 23, at noon, at the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Recipients of the 2013 President’s Awards for Excellence are Joseph Baxter, network security administrator, ITS; Darlene Burchett, janitor, Facilities Services; Patricia Feraldi, director, Alumni Affairs; and Dr. Keary Howard, professor, Mathematical Sciences.
Pre-health professionals discover challenges of aiding the visually impaired
Fourteen students, all members of the new Health Professions Club at SUNY Fredonia, functioned as “sighted guides” for Dining in the Dark, an annual event held by CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services of Jamestown to raise money and increase community awareness of the myriad challenges — both big and small — that visually impaired people face in their everyday lives.
"The Diary of Anne Frank" now playing in Marvel
“The Diary of Anne Frank” will be presented in Marvel Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center with six performances from April 12 to 20. It will be directed by Assistant Professor Jessica Hillman, who directed the sold-out Mainstage run of, “The Sound of Music,” in 2010.
