The SUNY Fredonia School of Music announces a rare opportunity to meet legendary Latin jazz trumpeter, Arturo Sandoval, on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Dunkirk Boys and Girls Club. The meet and greet is free and open to the community, part of the nine-time Grammy artist’s three-day residency at SUNY Fredonia.
The annual “Freedonia Marxonia: Marx Brothers Film Festival and Symposium” will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Tim Horton’s Cafe in the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia. All campus and community members are welcome to celebrate in the historical event.
Three Rochester-based filmmakers set out to answer a simple question -- what will climate change mean for our homes? What does climate change mean in a place where it is not an obvious threat? Where sea level rise isn't a factor, and frankly, where people might like it warmer? "Comfort Zone" brings the issue of climate change to a local and personal level. It is the story of the surprising outcomes when we try and translate this global problem to our individual lives.
Campus and community citizens will gather in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room at the sixth annual Veterans Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8, at 3:30 p.m. “SUNY Fredonia truly holds a special regard for all veterans past and present,” said Provost Terry Brown, who will lead the ceremony which honors veterans, active duty military members and those that preceded them. Three students will receive scholarships at the event: Daniel Rowe, Brittany Toapha, and Erin Dorozynski.
Elliott DeLine, an award-winning transgender fiction and non-fiction author, will conduct a book reading and signing at McEwen Hall Room 202 on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. The Women’s and Gender Studies program, Women’s Student Union and Pride Alliance are sponsoring DeLine’s visit, which is free and open to the public.
Spurred by curiosity and seemingly boundless energy, a young research team combed the SUNY Fredonia campus in search of a bobcat, the answer to a perplexing physics problem and a sample of amethyst, a variety of quartz. These were not traditional college-age students, but 12 inquisitive members of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Northern Chautauqua County engaged in “The Great SUNY Fredonia Science Scavenger Hunt” on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Full participation by SUNY Fredonia faculty and staff is being sought for the 2013 SEFA campaign, the State Employees’ Federated Appeal for community services. Kathy Dyckes and Sue Frietas are serving as co-chairs of the campus campaign. The committee has set a goal of $45,000 for the 2013 SEFA Campaign, and employees who donate before Nov. 22 are eligible to win prizes in a raffle to be drawn on Dec. 5.
Students and alumni from the Department of Visual Arts and New Media will hold a sale of handmade pottery at the Williams Center Multipurpose Room on Monday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m
FSA has begun a Casual Friday campaign since the start of the fall term to support a variety of charitable organizations. All FSA employees are invited, for a $1 (minimum) donation, to dress casually, and make organization suggestions. Each month a different charitable organization is being chosen from that list. October's selection is the new polar bear exhibit campaign at the Buffalo Zoo.
The event is a seminar for high school violinists, violists, cellists and bassists that brings young musicians in contact with Fredonia’s conservatory-trained string faculty.
