Cold War symposium Dec. 3 views mid-century from many angles

The symposium will feature a dozen SUNY Fredonia faculty speakers from various disciplines. Topics will include real-life experiences during the Cold War; how the sciences were impacted by the arms and space race; how television and advertising shaped and reflected American culture; and how the Cold War impacted consumer behavior, art censorship, civil rights and the image of soldiers.

Next "Brown Bag" on Dec. 1 takes the creative process past the premiere

Joining the Arts & Humanities Brown Bag Series’ year-long exploration of creativity, SUNY Fredonia Assistant Professors of Music Rob Deemer and Andrew Seigel, together with SUNY Fredonia students Michael Mendoza and Isaac Tayrien, will give a talk entitled, “From ‘What if…?’ to ‘What next?’: Taking the Creative Process Past the Premiere.”

U.S. and Mexican immigration policies explored Nov. 18

On Nov. 18, student organization Sigma Iota Rho, will host a presentation that focuses on U.S. immigration policies in Mexico. The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in S104 of the Williams Center. Dr. Alexander Caviedes of the department of Political Science will present information focusing on the effects of U.S. migration policies in Mexico. There will also be a keynote speaker, Ellen Calmus, who will discuss how Mexico’s rural areas have been affected by immigration

History honors students will hold conference, "The New Negro," Nov. 16

The theme “The New Negro” will be explored from various perspectives at a student conference to be held Tuesday, Nov. 16, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Williams Center. Following the keynote address by Vice President for Academic Affairs Virginia Horvath, individual presentations will be given by four teams of students as part of their Senior Capstone class in History.

Child trafficking is the subject of guest lecture Nov. 3 sponsored by Amnesty International

Guest lecturer Benjamin Lawrance from Rochester Institute of Technology is giving the lecture, "Child Trafficking and the Asylum Process in the US and Beyond," as part of the SUNY Fredonia Amnesty International Chapter's series, 'Crises in Context: a lecture series addressing contemporary challenges in Africa.’

Harvard researcher Daniel Wilson, '93, continues Convocation series Oct. 25

Fredonia alumnus Daniel Wilson, '93, a colleague of Convocation keynote speaker Dr. Howard Gardner, will continue this year’s Convocation series with a presentation on Monday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. in Room S104 of the Williams Center. Dr. Wilson is a principal investigator with “Project Zero,” an educational research group seeking to understand and enhance learning, thinking and creativity at the individual and institutional levels.
