The beach sweep is part of the statewide Adopt-a-Beach program and also serves as the kick-off event of the fifth annual Earth Week observance at SUNY Fredonia. Gloves, garbage bags, and Adopt-a-Beach materials will be provided; however, volunteers are encouraged to reuse plastic shopping bags for trash collection.
On April 22, Earth Day, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, will be launching “Make Your Mark,” the first tree planting project at SUNY Fredonia. The 30 trees will be planted in the area located between the Williams Center and the Kirkland Complex. The trees that will be planted have been select by Biology Professor Dr. Jonathan Titus.

The Educational Development Program (EDP) created a community initiative to help “Beautify the Campus” on Monday, Sept. 26, by going through the campus woodlot to pick up litter. The campus is invited to join the EDP sponsored event starting at the four-way stop sign located at the intersection of Ring Road and Symphony Circle. The time is 4 to 5 p.m.
Last year, 74 student and community volunteers gathered 442.4 pounds of trash at Point Gratiot during 2010 ICC event. In addition to the three beach sweeps, Fredonia’s Cub Scout Pack 267 will be leading a cleanup of a section of Canadaway Creek at 11 a.m. Uniting the campus and community through collective action and environmental engagement, the beach and creek cleanups are part of the university’s Constitution Week activities.
The August 27th event will be more than just a beach sweep. Teams of volunteers along the shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will take water samples, measure long shore currents, and perform other beach health assessments in addition to removing, cataloging and weighing beach debris.
SUNY Fredonia’s Class of 1959 dedicated its 50th anniversary gift last week, as two residential-sized wind generators were installed at the Mackie Memorial College Lodge, located in Brocton. The wind generators will reduce the lodge’s steep electric costs by 50 percent, and the green energy they provide fulfills the Class of 1959’s goal of setting a “green” example for future generations to follow.
After four straight years in the event, SUNY Fredonia saw a noticeable uptick in a variety of metrics, finishing in first place among all of the competing SUNY schools in RecycleMania’s Per Capita category.
On Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, SUNY Fredonia’s Academic Community Engagement (FACE) Center will be working with Dunkirk’s Academy Heights Neighborhood Association and NRG Energy to plant more than 200 trees in honor of Chautauqua County’s Bicentennial, one day following this year’s April 29 Arbor Day observance.
SUNY Fredonia will cap off a semester-long series of Sustainably-themed events with its annual Earth Week celebration, which runs through Thursday, April 21, leading up to Earth Day, April 22. Conservation will be discussed in a variety of ways — from arts and literature to actions and programs – throughout the next several days. In all, 22 events are scheduled, all of which are open to the public, and all but one of which are free.
