SUNY Fredonia named a Kiplinger’s ‘Best Value’ once again

SUNY Fredonia has once again been named by “Kiplinger’s Personal Finance” magazine’s list of the 100 best values in public colleges. The ranking features four-year public institutions that combine outstanding education with economic value. SUNY Fredonia ranks 97 th in the U.S. in the 2014 listing for in-state enrollees, and 67 th for out-of-state students, among nearly 600 four-year colleges nationwide.

Sarah Gerkensmeyer has poems published in literary journals

Four poems written by Sarah Gerkensmeyer, visiting assistant professor of English, have been accepted for publication in various literary journals since the release of her collection of short stories, “What You Are Now Enjoying,” last spring.

Senior Nancy Levensailor wins prestigious award to present poster

A SUNY Fredonia biology student has won a national award sponsored by the Genetics Society of America (GSA). Nancy Levensailor was one of 11 students out of 52 applicants who won the 2014 Victory Finnerty Undergraduate Travel Award that recognizes the top tier of early career geneticists and covers their travel expenses to the prestigious conference. It will enable the senior Molecular Genetics major to attend and present her poster at the society’s 55th Drosophila Research Conference to be held March 26-30 in San Diego, Calif.

Amber Powell presents thesis results at NCTM regional conference

In her presentation, titled "Student Misconceptions about Solving Multi-step Linear Equations," Powell reported the findings of her study in which students completed a 15-problem test of different types of linear equations appropriate for eighth-grade students according to state and national standards. Use of calculators was not permitted. The results indicated that problems containing negative numbers and terms moved to the opposite side of the equal sign were most likely to be incorrect.

Agreement signed with Niigata U. of Pharmacy and Applied Sciences

An agreement has been reached between SUNY Fredonia and Niigata University of Pharmacy and Applied Life Sciences (NUPALS), of Japan, to encourage the development of joint research projects and facilitate faculty and student mobility between the two educational institutions. NUPALS works with local industry and government to identify future medical, food, environmental and technology needs relative to applied life sciences. It was founded in 1977.

Amanda Pruden to explore non-traditional families in children's literature

Amanda Pruden, a junior Women's and Gender Studies major, will explore how alternative family living arrangements are depicted in children’s literature on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m., at Room G103B Williams Center. Her presentation, which is a project for the class, Women's and Gender Studies Special Topics, will look at the wide disparity between children’s books depicting non-nuclear families compared to nuclear or traditional families.
