The event is a seminar for high school violinists, violists, cellists and bassists that brings young musicians in contact with Fredonia’s conservatory-trained string faculty.
SUNY Fredonia’s annual Fall Sweep will take place Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Now in its ninth year, Fall Sweep is a yearly volunteer service initiative in which SUNY Fredonia students go out into the village of Fredonia to rake leaves off of their neighbors’ lawns to demonstrate the commitment they have to their community.
Don't miss the ninth annual, “Terror in the Trees.” Guests will be able to experience Fredonia's popular haunted forest tour on the Thursday through Saturday nights which "book-end" Halloween. The event will take place Oct. 24 to 26 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 from 8 p.m. to midnight. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society.
The Musical Journeys Program of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music continues its eighth season of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children. The next half-hour concert will be offered twice on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Dunkirk Free Library, 536 Central Ave., Dunkirk, at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Planned with the help of SUNY Fredonia faculty who are experts in music and education, the selected student ensemble concerts are designed to introduce very young audiences (from infants to 6-year-olds) to musical instruments.
The 2013 Learn to Skate and Figure Skating classes have begun in 10-week sessions at SUNY Fredonia’s Steele Hall Ice Skating Arena. Classes are available for beginners through advanced skaters ages 4 years and up. The Medical Technology program at SUNY Fredonia has been approved as “licensure eligible” by the New York State Department of Education, insuring that its graduates will continue to find employment in this high-growth, well-paying field. With that designation, SUNY Fredonia students earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology may be employed by hospital and clinical laboratories. The state now requires medical technologists employed in hospital and clinical laboratories to be licensed by the Department of Education, explained Patricia Astry, chair of the SUNY Fredonia Department of Biology and director of its Medical Technology program.
SUNY Fredonia’s 2013 Convocation series, "Raising Cultural Awareness and Building Global Relations," continues to celebrate diversity this semester through a Folk Song Festival, designed to blend music, history and culture together to promote cultural awareness and explore multiculturalism within the community. The festival will take place Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., in the Williams Center's Multipurpose Room.
President Virginia Horvath was honored Sept 19 by the Girls Scouts of Western New York with its Women of Distinction Award at a gala at Salvatore's Italian Gardens in Buffalo. Amy Jo Dorler, a local scout leader and SUNY Fredonia secretary in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice, nominated Dr. Horvath for the award.
A percussion trio will perform as part of the Children's Concert Series at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct 5. The concert, designed to introduce very young audiences to musical instruments, will be held at the Darwin R. Barker Library, 7 Day St., Fredonia. For more information, call (716) 673-4628. Groups of volunteers from SUNY Fredonia will lead beach cleanups at Point Gratiot and Wright Park in Dunkirk on Sunday, Sept. 22, from noon to 2:30 p.m., as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s 28th International Coastal Cleanup Campaign. This is a rescheduled date due to a severe weather forecast for Sept. 21. SUNY Fredonia’s Academic Community Engagement (FACE) Center is directing the cleanup with assistance from the New York branch of the American Littoral Society and SUNY Fredonia’s Sustainability Committee and Office of Volunteer and Community Services.
