Frank and Sallie Pullano to receive Jessie Hillman Award for Excellence

Dr. Frank and Sallie (Shapley) Pullano will receive the Jessie Hillman Award for Excellence at the Saturday, Nov. 10, Hillman Opera performance in Marvel Theatre. Specially designed medals will be presented to the couple at 7:30 p.m. before the curtain rises on this year’s Hillman Opera. The Hillman Memorial Music Association bestows the honor to recognize dedicated and respected musicians or educators.

Operation Breakfast Rescue collecting food Friendly Kitchen

SUNY Fredonia’s Office of Volunteer and Community Service will host its ninth “Operation: Breakfast Rescue” Nov. 7 tp 9 this year to benefit the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry’s “Friendly Kitchen.” Those interested in donating can provide non-perishable food items such as cereal, coffee/creamer, oatmeal, pancake mix, breakfast bars, baby formula, cream of wheat, canned fruit, and other shelf-stable breakfast food items.

First agreement with Native Americans was a "model of friendship and peace;" 400th anniversary event

Two guest speakers will discuss and display artifacts to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first agreement between Europeans and native Americans on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in 209 McEwen Hall. "Two Row Wampum," the name of the agreement, was between white settlers and the original inhabitants of Turtle Island (the North American continent). The agreement outlined a model of friendship and peace, of living in parallel forever, working together where appropriate, and respecting one’s sovereignty.

Four students will receive scholarships at Veterans Ceremony Thursday

The fifth annual Veterans Remembrance Ceremony and presentation of veteran scholarships/recognition awards will be held at SUNY Fredonia on Thursday, Nov. 8, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. University officials and community members gather each year to honor more than 23.4 million veterans and active duty military service men and women who fought to protect freedom and democracy as members of the Armed Forces.

SUNY Fredonia welcomes Vanessa and Helen (Class of '60) Williams back to campus for presentation and book signing

Internationally acclaimed entertainer Vanessa Williams and her mother, Helen Tinch Williams, a member of the Class of 1960, will appear on SUNY Fredonia’s campus Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall. The two have recently co-authored a collective autobiography, You Have No Idea, that characterizes the enduring relationship that aided Vanessa through a series of challenges which arose after she was crowned the first African-American Miss America in 1983.

Nixon policy to restore Native American self-determination is topic Tuesday night

How President Richard Nixon dramatically altered the Federal government’s Native American policy to support self-determination for Native American tribes and restoration of their culture will be examined Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. at 105 Fenton. Opening remarks will be given by Martin E. Seneca Jr, attorney and member of the Seneca Nation who is an expert in federal Indian Law.
