As a part of 2011-12 Convocation Series, Wendy Corsi Staub will continue this year's theme of "Taking Risks: Rewards and Repercussions" by talking about the road she traveled to "bestsellerdom" on Friday, Sept. 30 from 3 to 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public, followed by a reception in the lobby. Later that evening, Ms. Corsi Staub will have a book signing at The Book Nook at 7 pm, located at 1170 Central Avenue, inside of the D&F Plaza.
Alumna Julia Williamson is one of several new assistant coaches hired in Athletics this year. She has joined the cross country and track and field programs. Recently married, Williamson is the former Julia Hopson, a 2009 graduate of Fredonia State. She was a five-time All-American with the Blue Devils and a 2009 NCAA Division III national champion in the women's 20-pound weight throw.
Jessica Goodell was a non-traditional student at Fredonia until she graduated in 2010 with a psychology degree. The Iraq veteran had a story to tell, however, that would come as a surprise to many who knew her on campus. It was a story that she didn't talk about, but has since detailed in a book that is getting national publicity.
SellingHive is growing and expanding its operations in Dunkirk as the company prepares for the launch of its new social networking software this summer. Last week the company filled three full-time positions with young professionals who graduated from universities in western New York, including two from SUNY Fredonia.
SUNY Fredonia’s Class of 1959 dedicated its 50th anniversary gift last week, as two residential-sized wind generators were installed at the Mackie Memorial College Lodge, located in Brocton. The wind generators will reduce the lodge’s steep electric costs by 50 percent, and the green energy they provide fulfills the Class of 1959’s goal of setting a “green” example for future generations to follow.
Some 52 years after receiving his SUNY Fredonia degree in Music Education, Jerry Surra will return to campus to direct the Fredonia Wind Ensemble in a performance of the “Fredonia State Alumni March,” which he composed expressly for Commencement.
Fredonia President Dennis Hefner noted, "Karl Holz is one of SUNY Fredonia's most distinguished alumni. We are very excited to have him join us on this most significant day in the life of the campus..." Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations, will speak to graduates Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Steele Hall Arena.
Student achievement takes the spotlight at the annual Research & Creativity Expo, a talent showcase featuring some 350 students drawn from virtually all academic disciplines across the SUNY Fredonia campus, on Thursday, April 28, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Williams Center. Alumnus Dr. Matthew Hurtgen (right) will give the keynote talk, “The Chemical Evolution of Earth’s Atmosphere and Oceans,” at 4:15 p.m.
SUNY Fredonia’s Business Club has named Gregory S. Wollaston as its 34th Business Person of the Year. Mr. Wollaston will be honored with a dinner ceremony on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Williams Center. The evening’s keynote address will be delivered by Class of 1979 Fredonia alumnus Dave Fountaine, president of AQUEST Consulting LLC.
