Parents and family members of SUNY Fredonia students will return to campus to celebrate Family Weekend from Friday, Oct. 25 to Sunday, Oct. 27. Guests will be able to participate in array of activities sponsored by Campus Life and the Spectrum Entertainment Board. For a complete list of events, visit our Family Weekend site.
Virtuoso oboist/celtic violinist Colin Maier will give a free guest artist recital Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. His recital will include standard repertoire for the oboe along with celtic music played on violin, sometimes with a theatrical twist. Mr. Maier will be joined in this concert with School of Music pianist I-Fei Chen, oboe faculty Dr. Sarah Hamilton and Mark DuBois, and students Alec Dube, Ian Liedke and Emma Garcia. SUNY Fredonia’s annual Fall Sweep will take place Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Now in its ninth year, Fall Sweep is a yearly volunteer service initiative in which SUNY Fredonia students go out into the village of Fredonia to rake leaves off of their neighbors’ lawns to demonstrate the commitment they have to their community.
Don't miss the ninth annual, “Terror in the Trees.” Guests will be able to experience Fredonia's popular haunted forest tour on the Thursday through Saturday nights which "book-end" Halloween. The event will take place Oct. 24 to 26 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 from 8 p.m. to midnight. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society.
Understanding transgender concerns in higher education will be the focus of, “Transgender Awareness and Support,” a panel discussion to be held on Tuesday, Oct 29, at 3:30 p.m. at the Horizon Room East in the Williams Center. Members of the campus community will gain perspective into how they can be supportive of trans-identified and gender-queer students by becoming familiar with key terms and concepts, learning about current trends and best practices in higher education, and becoming aware of what has been done on campus to promote gender inclusivity and learn about what additional steps could be taken.
On Friday, Oct. 18, the SUNY Fredonia Secretarial/Clerical Professional Development Group will hold its annual Fall Conference at the College Lodge in Brocton. As part of the conference at 1 p.m., President Virginia Horvath will present secretarial awards including the Barbara Saletta Meritorious Service Award and the Poummit Secretarial Award in Memory of Janet Marks.
SUNY Fredonia’s Sigma Kappa Sorority will be hosting a trivia night to raise money for its Ultra Violet Campaign, on Monday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. The Ultra Violent Campaign helps to raise funds and awareness for Sigma Kappa philanthropic initiatives.
The redesigned Women's and Gender Studies Program will hold its annual Fall Gathering to inform students and faculty of the innovations made to the program on Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Williams Center Horizon Room from 3 to 5 p.m.
SUNY Fredonia’s 2013 Convocation series, "Raising Cultural Awareness and Building Global Relations," continues to celebrate diversity this semester through a Folk Song Festival, designed to blend music, history and culture together to promote cultural awareness and explore multiculturalism within the community. The festival will take place Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., in the Williams Center's Multipurpose Room.
The Center of Multicultural Affairs is sponsoring a poster competition as part of its 25th annual Rosa Parks Scholarship and Awards ceremony. The winner will receive $100 and his or her work will be used for promotional materials for the ceremony. All submissions are due to by Nov. 22 by 5 p.m.
