SUNY Fredonia, UB team-up for Lean certification course
The SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator is hosting a certification course this spring for business professionals of any industry who are interested in improving their company’s performance. The Certified Lean Professional (CLP) course educates candidates in the continuous improvement methodology of reducing waste.
Santa and Elf Holly on television for the 23rd year
For the 23rd year, community volunteers, Information Technology Services at SUNY Fredonia, and DFT Communications have donated their time and expertise to bring Santa and Elf Holly to the homes of local viewers on Wednesday, Dec. 18, and Thursday, Dec. 19. Santa and Elf Holly are assisted in their North Pole television studio by a crew of TV and phone elves to provide this special holiday program for children.
Biology majors honored as October 'Students of the Month'
Maria Green and Nicholas Dragonette, both senior Biology majors, were named Students of the Month for October by the Office of Residence Life. “Both are bright, pleasant and motivated students,” said Dr. Ted Lee of the Department of Biology, who nominated them for the award. As co-founders of the Health Professions Club, Green, of Loudonville, and Dragonette, of Orchard Park, have a key role in the club that provides advice to upperclassmen and serves as a forum for all pre-health students at SUNY Fredonia to discuss issues.
New Horizons Band holiday concert is cancelled
The New Horizons Band of Western New York has cancelled its winter concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, in the Dunkirk High School auditorium, due to weather.
Ski & Ride Club plans trip to Vermont in January
The SUNY Fredonia Ski & Ride Club, a student organization, will be active this winter providing opportunities for students and faculty and staff who like to ski or snowboard. The club is sponsoring a trip to Killington Mountain Resort, Vermont, during the first full week of January, and regular trips to Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, NY next semester.
Study relief for students arrives with 'De-stress for Success' events
The Counseling Center, together with various campus departments and faculty, will host De-stress for Success, an initiative for students during the last week of classes and Final Exam Week. De-stress for Success is a series of events, programs and workshops designed to help students find ways to reduce stress in a healthy, productive manner, and gain the focus they need to succeed during the challenging end-of-the-semester time.
Agreement signed with Niigata U. of Pharmacy and Applied Sciences
An agreement has been reached between SUNY Fredonia and Niigata University of Pharmacy and Applied Life Sciences (NUPALS), of Japan, to encourage the development of joint research projects and facilitate faculty and student mobility between the two educational institutions. NUPALS works with local industry and government to identify future medical, food, environmental and technology needs relative to applied life sciences. It was founded in 1977.
Amanda Pruden to explore non-traditional families in children's literature
Amanda Pruden, a junior Women's and Gender Studies major, will explore how alternative family living arrangements are depicted in children’s literature on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m., at Room G103B Williams Center. Her presentation, which is a project for the class, Women's and Gender Studies Special Topics, will look at the wide disparity between children’s books depicting non-nuclear families compared to nuclear or traditional families.
Fundraising campaign for typhoon victims inspired by profs' kids
English professors Aimee Nezhukumatathil and Emily VanDette have set up a fundraising campaign, inspired by their children, to support the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Donors will receive original art created by the children depicting sea creatures found in the Philippines. All donations go to "ShelterBox," an international disaster relief agency that is currently working in the Philippines.
Student group, Whitachoir, invited to perform in Avery Fisher Hall
The student group, Whitachoir, directed by graduate student Arthur Lewis, will join other choruses from around the world in a special residency program in New York City next March, culminating in special concert in Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall featuring the music of Eric Whitacre.
