Suicide prevention advocate and organization founder to speak at SUNY Fredonia

Jamie Tworkowski, founder of an organization which assists those dealing with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide, will speak on the SUNY Fredonia campus Thursday, Nov. 4, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Mr. Tworkowski is the founder of "To Write Love on Her Arms" (TWLOHA), a not-for-profit entity dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide. The organization exists to encourage, inform and inspire individuals who are suffering with these issues.

SUNY Fredonia pianist Mann to make Carnegie Hall debut

Jonathan Mann, assistant professor of Piano in the School of Music, will make his Carnegie Hall debut on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1:30 p.m. in the New York City landmark’s Weill Concert Hall. Mann was awarded this prestigious honor after being selected as a finalist in the Todd-Davis Germaine Classical Fellows Competition in 2009. He will premiere a piece written for him by Dr. Robert Deemer, assistant professor of Composition.

Two SUNY Fredonia Counselors, Dr. Tracy Stenger, Assistant Director, and Dr. Leanna White, Senior Counselor, presented the results of their recent research to participants of the American College Counseling Association (ACCA) conference in St. Louis, MO, on Saturday, Oct. 9. Their presentation was entitled "Maximizing Impact and Minimizing Burnout: Evaluation of Outcomes-Based Practice in a University Counseling Center."

Workshop will draw nearly 200 speech therapy professionals and students Oct. 15

Kwong to deliver Kasling; Young Scholar / Artist awards to be given Oct. 5

Dr. Harris Kwong will deliver the Kasling Lecture Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. His talk is titled “The Magical World of Graph Labeling.” Dr. Kwong studies number theory, combinatorics, and graph theory, and has an extensive publication list in internationally-refereed journals. He has been teaching at SUNY Fredonia since 1987 and in 1999 led the creation of the Mathematics Honors Program.

SUNY Fredonia hosts 21st Annual Early Childhood Conference Oct. 23

The conference brings together the early childhood community of Chautauqua County, which includes those who work in the many early care and education programs, schools and agencies that serve young children and their families. The featured keynote speaker is Dr. Jennifer Berke, longtime member of CCAEYC and Director of the Early Childhood program at Mercyhurst College’s Northeast, Pa. campus.

Juniaid Zubairi will describe MEDTOC at first Social Science Colloquium Sept. 29

MEDTOC is a system defined by Dr. Zubairi for transmitting vital signs of patients using a cellular network. He received the support of the office of Graduate Studies and Research at SUNY Fredonia for building a wireless sensor network testbed for implementation of the medical data collection and processing phase of MEDTOC.
