SEFA donations top $46,000 goal for 2013 at SUNY

For the 18 th consecutive year, the SEFA (State Employees’ Federal Appeal) campaign at SUNY Fredonia exceeded its goal. This year’s campaign netted $46,683.50, or nearly 1.5 percent above the 2013’s goal of $46,000.The annual campaign, which provides funding throughout the year to support health and human services agencies that serve people of all ages and backgrounds in this area as well as across the state, was supported by over 340 current and retired employees.

SUNY Fredonia employees receive Custodial Safety Incentive Awards

Eight SUNY Fredonia employees were formally recognized as recipients of Custodial Safety Incentive Awards at the 13 th annual Custodial Services Awards Recognition luncheon held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Williams Center Horizon Room . Recipients of individual Safety Incentive Awards, based on building inspections conducted during the fall semester, included Julia Baughman, Rose McCune and Aida Hernandez, all of Kasling Hall; Kathy Walters, Mary Ann Wykstra, Juliana Krauter and Lori Martin, of the Williams Center; and Susan Lucas of the Campus and Community Childcare Center.

Applications now being accepted for 2014 Community Partners Program

The public relations curriculum at SUNY Fredonia is now accepting applications for the 2014 Community Partners Program, in which students conduct research and develop comprehensive public relations plans, including the development of materials, for one or more nonprofit, community-based organizations. Participating organizations are given all materials at the end of the semester. The deadline for applying for the 2014 program is Friday, Jan. 24.

Campus will observe Energy Savings Schedule Dec. 21 through Jan. 1; details announced

Services and operations at SUNY Fredonia will be mostly curtailed for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in order to conserve utility costs. With the exception of a few offices, college buildings will be closed and heat reduced, beginning at the close of business on Friday, Dec. 20. Many facilities will re-open Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2014.

Students assemble Beowulf computer cluster; create high-performance system

Computer Science majors Nicholas Freville and Adam Toth have assembled a Beowulf cluster, comprised of three tiny computers called Raspberry Pi’s, that work in tandem to solve complex problems. A Beowulf cluster is a parallel computing system achieved by linking normally identical, commodity-grade computers into a small local area network (LAN). The result gives a huge boost of power despite using inexpensive, personal computer hardware.

Role play game engages history students in an unusual way

Dr. Steve Fabian of the Department of History has proven that drama is not just for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Throughout the semester, he led an innovative role play game in his Honors 230 class to teach the history of the South African apartheid. Titled, "Conflicts and Crises in African History," the game derived from a series of role play games created by Barnard College called, “Reacting to the Past.”

SUNY Fredonia named a Kiplinger's 'Best Value' once again

SUNY Fredonia has once again been named by “Kiplinger’s Personal Finance” magazine’s list of the 100 best values in public colleges. The ranking cites four-year public colleges and universities that combine outstanding education with economic value. They are based on a combination of academics and affordability, according to its website, and compare the cost of tuition, fees, room and board for both in-state and out-of-state students at nearly 600 public four-year institutions across the country.

SUNY Fredonia has once again been named by “Kiplinger’s Personal Finance” magazine’s list of the 100 best values in public colleges. The ranking features four-year public institutions that combine outstanding education with economic value. SUNY Fredonia ranks 97 th in the U.S. in the 2014 listing for in-state enrollees, and 67 th for out-of-state students, among nearly 600 four-year colleges nationwide.
