Graham Jones (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) won three individual events as the men's swimming and diving team competed at Cortland on Feb. 4. Jones won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.90), the 100-yard freestyle (50.55), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.07).
Fredonia had three individual winners Feb. 4 at the Mount Union College Wuske Invitational track and field meet. Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y.), a junior, won the high jump by clearing 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3.75 inches), just short of her indoor personal-best. Brittany Feldman (Jamestown), also a junior, hit the tape in the 400 meters in 58.34 seconds, first among 43 women entered in 10 heats. There were 21 women in the 5,000 meters, eight from Fredonia, with Blue Devil sophomore Hannah Kurbs (Lockport) winning with the time of 18:41.56, about two seconds off her personal best, set outdoors.
Fredonia's Justyn Haines (Albion) cleared a personal-best 4.60 meters to win the men's pole vault at the Feb. 4 Mount Union College Wuske Invitational Track & Field meet. Haines, a junior, passed until the bar reached 4.30 meters. He made the height, then cleared 4.45 meters, and then 4.60 (15 feet, 1 inch), the 28th best vault so far this winter in NCAA Division III.
Meghan Bartlett (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) and Sam Kowalewski (Cowlesville/Attica) combined to sweep both diving events at Cortland on Feb. 4. Kowalewski (272.25) won the 3-meter board, edging Bartlett by 2.15 points. Off the 1-meter board, Bartlett finished with a 296.95 to Kowalewski's runner-up score of 257.20.
Fredonia's four seniors contributed to a 4-0 season-ending softball win April 30 over Plattsburgh. The day also saw a team home run record tied and a shutout by a freshman pitcher.
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collected money at games and meets during the holiday season to help local families in need, leading to a very successful campaign. The students raised $402.39, which was donated to the local Salvation Army.
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport/Lockport) had a record night and the Fredonia women's basketball team used a barrage of early three-point baskets to take a commanding lead and cruised to a 109-61 victory over Allegheny College on Monday. Cheatham set a school single-game mark with 10 threes. Jamie Curry (Ransomville/Wilson) added a trio of threes, as the team combined to go 15 of 25 from downtown.The 109 points is also the highest output on record going back to the 1982-83 season.
Fredonia springboard diver Arron Carlson (LeRoy/Notre Dame) is now 20-0 after winning both boards Saturday during the Blue Devils' dual home meet against Brockport and Allegheny. Carlson, a senior, scored 353.05 in the 1-meter and 311.35 in the 3-meter. It was the final home meet of his collegiate career, where he set numerous pool records over four seasons.
Meghan Bartlett (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown), was a double-winner Saturday during Fredonia women's swimming and diving dual meet against Allegheny and Brockport. Bartlett, now 18-2 on the season, scored 270.20 points off the 1-meter board and 277 points off the 3-meter board.
Down one, Alexis Cheatham's (Lockport/Lockport) four-point play in overtime proved to be the game's biggest play as the Fredonia women's basketball team held on for a 73-70 victory at Brockport. Cheatham missed a potential game-winning layup as time ran out in regulation, but made up for it with seven points in the extra frame.
