Opera composer Jake Heggie featured in Ethos New Music Society concert

World-renowned opera and art song composer Jake Heggie, whose residency at SUNY Fredonia opens the Ethos New Music Society’s 14th annual NewSound Festival, will be the guest conductor at a concert of his works performed by School of Music students and faculty at Rosch Recital Hall on Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m.

Dr. Gurmukh Singh, a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, has published a scholarly article entitled, “Wavelet analysis of shower track distribution in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions,” in the Journal of Advances in High Energy Physics, Vol. 2013.

Fredonia Communication professor's book pioneers Foreign Service Nationals' views of Americans

Communication Professor Bond Benton has written the first book that answers a relevant question: What’s it like to be a non-American working for an American organization? Dr. Bond Benton It’s an issue of growing importance as American companies and institutions expand abroad, but there’s a largely overlooked group — non-American Foreign Service Nationals employed by the U.S. Department of State — for whom it is a crucial issue that needs to be brought to the forefront.

David Kinkela, associate professor of History, served as co-editor of, “Water: History, Power, Crisis,” a special issue of Radical History Review, which was recently named the co-winner of the Council of Editors Learned Journal’s Best Special Issue Award for 2013.

Applications now being accepted for 2014 Community Partners Program

The public relations curriculum at SUNY Fredonia is now accepting applications for the 2014 Community Partners Program, in which students conduct research and develop comprehensive public relations plans, including the development of materials, for one or more nonprofit, community-based organizations. Participating organizations are given all materials at the end of the semester. The deadline for applying for the 2014 program is Friday, Jan. 24.

Students assemble Beowulf computer cluster; create high-performance system

Computer Science majors Nicholas Freville and Adam Toth have assembled a Beowulf cluster, comprised of three tiny computers called Raspberry Pi’s, that work in tandem to solve complex problems. A Beowulf cluster is a parallel computing system achieved by linking normally identical, commodity-grade computers into a small local area network (LAN). The result gives a huge boost of power despite using inexpensive, personal computer hardware.

Biology majors honored as October 'Students of the Month'

Maria Green and Nicholas Dragonette, both senior Biology majors, were named Students of the Month for October by the Office of Residence Life. “Both are bright, pleasant and motivated students,” said Dr. Ted Lee of the Department of Biology, who nominated them for the award. As co-founders of the Health Professions Club, Green, of Loudonville, and Dragonette, of Orchard Park, have a key role in the club that provides advice to upperclassmen and serves as a forum for all pre-health students at SUNY Fredonia to discuss issues.

Role play game engages history students in an unusual way

Dr. Steve Fabian of the Department of History has proven that drama is not just for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Throughout the semester, he led an innovative role play game in his Honors 230 class to teach the history of the South African apartheid. Titled, "Conflicts and Crises in African History," the game derived from a series of role play games created by Barnard College called, “Reacting to the Past.”
