Natalie Gerber's article on Wallace Stevens wins award

Associate Professor of English Natalie Gerber's article “Wallace Stevens' Mixed-Breed Versifying and His Adaptations of Blank-Verse Practice” is the winner of the first annual John N. Serio Award for the Best Article Published in The Wallace Stevens Journal. This first award, which considered articles published in the Spring and Fall 2011 volumes, was selected by Charles Altieri, UC Berkeley; Juliette Utard, Sorbonne; and Lisa Goldfarb, NYU.

Richard Alexander named to SUNY Fredonia College Council

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has appointed Richard L. Alexander to the SUNY Fredonia College Council. His seven-year appointment is effective immediately and will conclude in 2019. Mr. Alexander is President and Chief Consultant of Alexander and Associates, a business development and management company he founded in 2006 which focuses on business start-up and expansion efforts. Prior to this, he served as Executive Director of the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency and its Economic Development Department from 1998 to 2006. He also spent 22 years as Chief Executive Officer of Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc.

Fitzgerald, Geraci, Moore and Rzepka participate in obstacle course to benefit National Breast Cancer Foundation

Four SUNY Fredonia faculty and staff participated in the 2012 5k Dirty Girl Mud Run to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation, including Carrie Fitzgerald, Assistant Professor Language Learning & Leadership Laura Geraci, Assistant Professor Curriculum & Development Shannon Moore, Assistant Director Facilities Planning/Contract Administration Jodi Rzepka, Associate Director Human Resources.The 5K run was held over two days at Kissing Bridge and included 11 obstacle courses that started with a 1/2 mile, up-hill mud climb along Mistletoe. Over 11,000 women participated nation wide.

Sarah Gerkensmeyer's short stories win Autumn House Press Fiction Prize

Visiting Assistant Professor for the English department Sarah Gerkensmeyer has written the collection of short stories, “What You Are Now Enjoying,” which was selected by novelist Stewart O’Nan as the winner of the 2012 Autumn House Press Fiction Prize. This will be her first book and will be published in early 2013. The publishing contract includes both a $1000 advance against royalties as well as a $1500 prize to help jump-start a reading tour.

Fritzinger elected to board of Business Incubator Association of New York State

Robert Fritzinger, Director of the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, has been elected to the board of directors by members of the Business Incubator Association of New York State (BIA/NYS). Members and guests gathered at the University at Buffalo’s NYS Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences to attend the daylong 2012 annual meeting of the BIA/NYS earlier this year. His selection to the board provides the opportunity to network with incubators across the state to discuss goals and strategies.

Jeanette McVicker examines subjectivity in mainstream news media; article published in <em>Philosophy Today</em>

Jeanette McVicker, professor of English, has been working on a philosophical investigation of subjectivity as constructed by mainstream news media for the past year. The first leg of that project was published this summer: “The Task of Journalism in the Age of Terrorism: Imagining the Profane” in Philosophy Today 56(2), 243-252, May 2012, ed. David Pellauer.

SUNY Fredonia recognizes five with 2012 Outstanding Administrative Service Award

Five SUNY Fredonia employees, whose collective service spans more than 48 years and all five major departments within the Administrative division, have received Outstanding Administrative Service Awards in recognition of exemplary service during 2012. Award recipients and their respective positions include: Lynn Bowers, Professional Staff; Director of Student Accounts. A resident of Dunkirk, Ms. Bowers began at SUNY Fredonia in April 2000 as the Director of Student Accounts.
