Fredonia won its home opener on a hot Labor Day afternoon on the refurbished Steele Hall Courts. The Blue Devils (1-1) defeated the Thiel Tomcats, 6-3. Sophomore Chloe Cohen was a double-winner, teaming with junior Halee Dickinson at No. 2 doubles and clinching Fredonia's team win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.
There was a lot to like about Fredonia women volleyball's weekend sweep during the Cortland Red Dragon Classic. There was solid play at crunch time, a player milestone, and contributions from newcomers. It all added up to a 4-0 weekend and a 5-0 start to the regular season.
The Blue Devils open up their regular season on Tuesday, Sept. 1 in Meadville, Pa. against Allegheny. The 2015 squad will again be led by the four seniors who've become bedrocks of the team's success: Hokaj, middle blocker Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y./ West Seneca East), opposite Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), and setter Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena).
Fredonia Director of Athletics Greg Prechtl announced the appointment of two assistant athletic trainers, Erin Lanni and Kelly Wilson. Both women come to Fredonia from major college programs.
Kendell McFayden has joined the Fredonia Blue Devil men's soccer coaching staff in time for the start of the 2015 season. A former collegiate standout who has played professionally, McFayden succeeds long-time Blue Devil assistant and former player John Grabowski, who is beginning his first season as head coach of men's soccer at Erie County Community College.
The Blue Devil women's volleyball team won the final two matches of the Hiram Invitational on Saturday to finish 3-1 on the weekend. Fredonia now stands at 12-2 overall as they prepare to enter SUNYAC pool play in Buffalo next weekend.
Fredonia defeated Wells College, 5-4, in women's tennis Saturday afternoon. The rain-plagued match saw the Blue Devils (3-3) win four of six singles match and one doubles match.
The Fredonia Blue Devils are among the 752 teams to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2014-15 season. The Blue Devils made the list by attaining a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.30 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Three Fredonia Blue Devil track and field athletes were cited by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their academic achievements. Laura Morrison, a junior middle distance runner on the women's team, and two male runners, graduate Zakk Hess and senior Collin Mulcahy earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
The Fredonia women's swimming and diving team recently received Scholar All-America designation from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Fredonia had the second highest team GPA among SUNYAC schools.
