SUNY Fredonia alumnus and attorney is 2012 Commencement keynote speaker

SUNY Fredonia’s Commencement keynote speaker will be alumnus and attorney Dale A. Cooter of Washington, D.C. Ceremonies are slated for Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Steele Hall Arena on campus. Mr. Cooter is a trial lawyer who has been practicing in the Washington, D.C., area since 1975. He graduated cum laude from Fredonia in 1970 with a major in political science.

SUNY Fredonia grad Helen Williams co-writes Vanessa Williams biography

Helen Williams, a SUNY Fredonia graduate and mother of actress Vanessa Williams, shares the spotlight in an enduring photograph on the front cover of a new biography, “You Have No Idea,” that she helped her famous daughter write. SUNY Fredonia will host a book-signing for both authors on Nov. 10. The widely anticipated book is the first by Vanessa, whose career includes starring roles on “The Right Stuff,” “Ugly Betty” and “Desperate Housewives.

Electronics recycling day reminds two alums of their favorite campus

SUNY Fredonia has had a history of celebrating Earth Day since its origins in 1970. Two former students who were impacted by what they learned about the environment at Fredonia are Environmental Scientist Ryan Burke, '11, and Casey Whyte, '09. who works for the firm that will collect the electronic recyclables this weekend at SUNY Fredonia.

National auditions open doors for Kathleen Grace Fiori

SUNY Fredonia has its share of famous performing artists, and another one to watch out for is graduating senior Kathleen Grace Fiori. After auditioning before the largest combined audition conference in the U.S., the Musical Theatre major has received 19 callbacks and three job offers--but she won't make up her mind until more auditions take place with national touring companies in May.

World premiere of student composer and alumni saxophone collaboration performed in NYC Nov. 16.

A collaboration between two SUNY Fredonia School of Music alumni and a current student composer will culminate in a world premiere to be performed in New York City on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Jacob Swanson and Sarah Marchitelli, former students of Professor Wildy Zumwalt, will perform, “We Are Art,” a three-movement piece for soprano and alto saxophone and electronics that was written by Kate Parker, a junior composition major.

EDP Alumni Speaker Series features Sherryl Weems Wednesday

Dr. Sherryl D. Weems, Class of 1976, is returning to Fredonia as a part of EDP’s Alumni Speaker Series. Dr. Weems was recently named the Provost at Victory University in Memphis, Tenn., after serving SUNY Buffalo as Associate Vice-Provost for Continuing and Professional Studies and Executive Director of the Educational Opportunity Center. She will give her address, “Excellence without Excuses”, at 3:30 p.m. in 101 Jewett Hall, Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Former resident and novelist to speak at SUNY Fredonia

SUNY Fredonia alumna Sarie Naetzker Mackay will talk to students at her alma mater at the invitation of the English Department on Thursday, Oct. 13. The author of two historical novels will give a Craft Talk at 4 p.m. and read from her works at 7 p.m., followed by a book signing. Both events will be held in McEwen Hall Room 202. The public is invited.
