Daniela Peterka-Benton took students to Vienna to study legal system of Austria this summer

This summer, the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice was able to offer a study abroad program in Vienna, Austria, for the first time entitled “Law, Crime and Punishment in Austria”. Dr. Daniela Peterka-Benton, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, led the program, which was open to all interested students. During their 10-day stay in Austria, students got the chance to learn about Austria’s legal history, which included a thought provoking tour of Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Evolving role of women in Middle East focus of International Brown Bag Lunch Series Sept. 10

The changing role of women in the Middle East will be the focus of Dr. Iclal Vanwesenbeeck’s presentation at the International Brown Bag Luncheon on Monday, Sept. 10, beginning at noon, at the Fenton Hall English Reading Room (Fenton 127). In her talk, “Middle Eastern Women: Tradition, Development and Change,” Vanwesenbeeck, English professor, will discuss local perspectives on women’s movement in Jordan and the Middle East and elaborate on current challenges and achievements of Jordanian women.

Reed Library hosts photography exhibit and guest historians focusing on African Americans during New Deal era

Reed Library announces the new exhibit, “Claiming Citizenship: African Americans and New Deal Photography,” showing now until October 15. Two presentations by guest historians will be included in the program, both of which are free and will be held in Reed Library’s Japanese Garden area. The exhibit brings to campus guest historian and author Rickie Solinger, who will give the talk, “What Citizenship Looks Like — 1930s and Today,” on Sept. 25 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Woodlot litter pickup set for Sept. 11

The campus is invited to join the Educational Development Program (EDP) for a community initiative to help “Beautify the Campus” on Tuesday, Sept. 11, by going through the campus woodlot to pick up litter. The EDP sponsored event will be begin at the four-way stop sign, located at the intersection of Ring Road and Symphony Circle at 3:30 p.m.

Junior music ed major, Nicki Peets, taught at orphanage in Guatemala

Junior Nicki Peets, above center, lived in Fraijanes, Guatemala, for two months this summer, where she taught music as therapy to needy children. She is majoring in music education major and minoring in Spanish at SUNY Fredonia. In the middle of this third world, poverty-stricken, crime-ridden country, she became the music teacher at the orphanage, “Casa Bernabé,” where the Guatemalan government sends the most abused, neglected or abandoned children.

Mark Kleehammer, '12, presented award-winning talk on his research at the MAA's "Mathfest"

Mathematics alumnus and May graduate Mark Kleehammer presented the talk, "Star Studded Mathematics," at the Mathematical Association of America's Mathfest in Madison, WI on August 3. Based on his research at SUNY Fredonia into vertex angles in an arbitrary star, the talk won him an award at the conference. He is now beginning graduate school in mathematics at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
