SUNY Fredonia is one of three SUNY schools placed among the Sierra Club’s ranking of “Cool Schools” in recognition of its commitment to environmental sustainability. Points were assigned by the Sierra Club in the following categories: co-curricular, education/research, energy, transport, waste, water, purchasing, food, planning, investing and innovation. SUNY Fredonia achieved an overall score of 273.40. The range of scores was 126.76 to 709.17, with a maximum 894.50 possible.
Dr. Cheryl Drout, Dr. Gary Lash and Dr. David Kinkela will be honored this fall during three lecture events. Drout won the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching last spring and will give the honorary lecture on Sept. 11. Lash is the annual Kasling Lecturer for the event planned Oct. 16, when Kinkela will be given the Hagan Young Scholar/Artist Award.
The Fredonia State Athletics and Recreation Department recently added to its staff with the hire of Casey Graham as an assistant athletic trainer. She will also assume responsibilities in the new and expanded Blue Devil Fitness Center, due to open early next year. Her appointment was made possible through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grant Program.
SUNY Fredonia President Virginia Horvath welcomed United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to its campus for the first time on Thursday, August 9. She visited and spoke at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, one of Western New York’s most thriving economic development centers.
Chautauqua County business professionals will have easier access to business improvement education through the University at Buffalo’s TCIE (formerly The Center for Industrial Effectiveness) fall 2012 lineup when two programs are offered at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator as part of a new partnership: the Certified Lean Professional (CLP) course and the three-day ISO 9001:2008 Internal Auditor training. Both are open to individuals from all companies, whether affiliated with the incubator or not.
“I wanted to do something to help young people today to become teachers,” the 1952 graduate explained. “You see, I was so fortunate. Back in 1948, Fredonia didn’t charge tuition, so that made it possible for me to go to college and become a teacher. All these years I had it in the back of my mind I wanted to do something to help,” she said.
The first Calvin Smith Festival & Brass Quintet Competition was created in Oak Ridge, Tenn., to honor the late 1972 Fredonia alumnus who passed away from a sudden heart attack at just 61 years of age, and SUNY Fredonia’s Fireside Brass Quintet, an all-student musical group, won second place — and $1,000 — at the inaugural event.

Three weeks of sailing and living on the historic vessel, the Flagship Niagara, will offer undergraduates an unparalleled environmental science field experience this summer as they measure the presence of plastics pollution in environmentally sensitive areas within three of the five Great Lakes. Dr. Sherri Mason of the Chemistry Department is leading the research, and openings exist for interested students.
More than 1,400 SUNY Fredonia students were honored in Steele Hall Arena today as President Dennis L. Hefner, for the final time in his 16-year tenure, conferred bachelor’s and master’s degrees and advanced certificates. Commencement at Fredonia included two nearly identical events at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to accommodate the large number of undergraduate and graduate students as well as their family and friends, many of whom traveled great distances to join them for this memorable occasion.
