Chair, Biology Dept.

Welcome!

Fredonia Biology is a place where students and faculty work together to better understand life and the natural world. We offer five programs in the department: Biology, Biology Adolescence Education, Exercise Science, Medical Technology and Molecular Genetics. We also offer a masters degree graduate program in Biology.

Our programs offer diverse opportunities for learning. Students learn how to be successful in the freshman Studying for Success seminar. We keep enrollment low in all our classes, including our freshman biology lecture and lab courses, to ensure students have individualized opportunities for learning. Students are advised, instructed and mentored by our faculty who have won awards for their teaching and scholarship. All undergraduate students are required to perform a senior capstone in the form of research, internship or a specialized course. The capstone requires the student to engage in a significant problem solving activity and requires a formal written and oral presentation. We also have a Biology Honors program available for high achieving majors, and we offer fellowships to support student research during the summer.

We moved into our new Science Center in 2015. This state of the art building is equipped with cutting edge instrumentation and technology, and allows increased opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate in the classroom and laboratory.

Our alumni have been highly successful in diverse and meaningful career paths. They are clinical scientists, high school teachers, biomedical research scientists, physicians, pharmacists, university professors, environmental scientists at the DEC and US Fish and Wildlife, venture capitalists, veterinarians, nurses, virologists with the NIH and USDA, lawyers, CEOs, laboratory directors and forensic scientists. And the list goes on…
