For two consecutive summers I have had the opportunity to intern at the Caribbean Primate Research Center in Puerto Rico. This experience gave me the opportunity to work with five different veterinarians who care for the primates at the center. I gained experience in giving medications, assisting with surgeries, performing behavioral Krystal Lebronstudies, caring for trauma wounds resulting from fighting between the primates and tending to other miscellaneous medical needs. It was amazing to see the interactions between the primates and their individual personalities; but my favorite aspect was caring for the ill primates and helping them get back to their families. Their personalities are extremely similar to those of humans which is fascinating to me. Since my professional plans for the future are to work as a veterinarian with primates, these internships have allowed me tor learn about the care of primates as well as how a primate center runs. Overall, it greatly increased my motivation to become a veterinarian.
