Admission & Audition Procedures for BFA Dance

BFA Dance

Video auditions for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance are available to all prospective students. To submit a video audition, simply upload the required materials to a GoogleDrive folder labeled Yourname-BFADance and transfer ownership of the folder to lisa.schrantz@fredonia.edu. Please note that transfer of ownership is essential, as the materials will be shared with the Dance faculty for evaluation. Please fill out the Audition Request Form and we will send you information on the audition process.

All prospective students must submit the following materials:

1.) Ballet (2 minutes):

     A. A short selection of barrework, including plies and grand battements,

     B. An adagio phrase in the center,

     C. Allegro work in the center (16 bars petit allegro, 16 bars grand allegro).

2.) Contemporary/Modern Dance (2 minutes): A center or traveling phrase of phrases, no more than 2 minutes in length, that demonstrates the dancer's understanding of the use of weight and space, and elements such as turns, fall, jumps, and floor work.

3.) Jazz Dance (2 minutes): A center or traveling phrase or phrases, no more than 2 minutes in length, that demonstrates the dancer's understanding of Africanist aesthetics, an articulate torso, isolation, and syncopation.

4.) Solo Performance (90 seconds): This solo may be presenting in any style the dancer chooses and may be either self or professionally choreographed.

Please note: Total length of the video submission may not exceed 8 minutes. All dancers must wear form-fitted, dance appropriate attire for all parts of their audition.

5.) Resume and Personal Statement (no more than 2 pages, typed and double-spaced): In your own words, please tell us what dance means to you. This can take any number of forms: you could tell us about the most memorable dancing experience you've had up to this point, you could let us know what aspects of dance interest you most, or you could tell us about your goals for the future. It's up to you!

Audition results will be sent via email and standard mail, so please make sure your mailing and email addresses are accurate on your Audition Request Form.

Please don't hesitate to contact the Department of Theatre and Dance with additional questions.
