Requirements for an Initial Certificate:
Upon successful completion of your program, Fredonia will recommend you for certification to New York State. The Initial Certification is valid for five years after the date on the certificate. During this five-year period, you must complete requirements for the professional certificate.
Steps to Initial Certification:
- Completing and Clearing a Fingerprint Screening
- Completion of Fredonia's Degree Requirements
- Successful Completion of all Required NYSTCE Tests
- Completion of Fredonia’s TEACH Release Waiver (Typically Emailed by the Office of Student Services)
- Completion of the TEACH Online Application for Certification and Payment of Applicable Fees for Each TEACH Application
Progression from Initial to Professional Certification:
Initial Certification is valid for five years. Check your TEACH account for the exact expiration date of your initial certification.
Steps to Professional Certification:
- Complete an appropriate Master's Degree.
- Complete and document proof of the DASA training. Click here for a list of approved DASA providers.
- Complete and document 3 years of acceptable teaching experience. Three years equates to 540 days. All teaching experience must be verified using this form: Verification of Paid Experience Form
- Complete the mentored experience form, if you are teaching in a non-public school.
- Submit the Online Release Authorization Form if you will or have completed an approved program at SUNY Fredonia.
- Complete the application for professional certification on TEACH
- Professional certification is available only to citizens and lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States.
Initial Reissuance:
You can inquire about what to do if your certificate is about to expire or is already expired by heading here. Be aware that reissuances are typically only granted within six months of the expiration date.
