Melina Esse, one of the world’s foremost experts on 19th century Italian opera, will give a lecture on the operas of Rossini.
Participating artists are Amanda Besl-Treeby, Bob Booth, Jason Dilworth, Tim Frerichs, Phil Hastings, Steve Komp, Liz Lee, Alberto Rey, Hide Sadohara, Peter Tucker and Megan Urban.
The event is a seminar for high school violinists, violists, cellists and bassists that brings young musicians in contact with Fredonia’s conservatory-trained string faculty.
Virtuoso oboist/celtic violinist Colin Maier will give a free guest artist recital Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. His recital will include standard repertoire for the oboe along with celtic music played on violin, sometimes with a theatrical twist. Mr. Maier will be joined in this concert with School of Music pianist I-Fei Chen, oboe faculty Dr. Sarah Hamilton and Mark DuBois, and students Alec Dube, Ian Liedke and Emma Garcia. The Musical Journeys Program of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music continues its eighth season of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children. The next half-hour concert will be offered twice on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Dunkirk Free Library, 536 Central Ave., Dunkirk, at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Planned with the help of SUNY Fredonia faculty who are experts in music and education, the selected student ensemble concerts are designed to introduce very young audiences (from infants to 6-year-olds) to musical instruments.
SUNY Fredonia will host BombaYo! for three lectures/workshops to celebrate the Afro Puerto Rican tradition of Bomba. The Latinos Unidos and Orchesis event will include a variety of Latin music for an interactive celebration. The first lecture/workshop is Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Rosch Recital Hall; the next on Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room; and the third on Friday, Oct.11 in Mason Hall Room 1080. Each starts at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
The Fredonia School of Music will present two major concerts during Homecoming Weekend. The SUNY Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge and assistant conductor Eric Mahl, with Concerto Competition winner Amanda Bottoms, will perform on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall. A Choral Showcase will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall featuring the College Choir, Chamber Choir and Women’s Choir. Both events are free and the public is invited to attend.
SUNY Fredonia’s Latinos Unidos will be hosting Puerto Rican artist Yasmin Hernandez to display her work and speak with students on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8:30 p.m., in McEwen Hall Room 202. Her work has been shown in Puerto Rico and Eastern Harlem, and is rooted in struggles for personal, political and spiritual liberation.
Another guest artist of the Fredonia Dance Ensemble will be offering two free classes in October that will be open to the entire campus community. Cheryl Halliburton-Beatty, associate professor of Dance Studies at C.W. Post and co-director of the Post Concert Dance Company, will be at SUNY Fredonia for a week-long guest artist residency with the Fredonia Dance Ensemble. She will teach an African Dance class on Friday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m., and on Thursday, Oct. 10, she will teach an Afro-Jazz class from 5 to 7 p.m., both in Dods Hall Room 148.
