TADA AAPI Statement 3/23/2021

The Department of Theatre & Dance at the State University of New York at Fredonia condemns the violent murders of Daoyou Feng 冯道友, Hyun Jung Grant [김]현정, Sun Cha Kim 김선자, Paul Andre Michels, Soon Chung Park 박순정, Xiaojie Tan 谭小洁, Delaina Ashley Yaun, and Yong Ae Yue 유영애

We  acknowledge this was a targeted hate attack towards the Asian American and Pacific Islander community and women. As we do the work to create an Anti-Racist theater and dance community, we feel it is important to condem this event, offer support to those negatively affected, and continue to educate ourselves.

We stand in solidarity with the statement made by The State University of New York and the City University of New York, available below.

https://www.suny.edu/suny-news/press-releases/3-21/3-18-21-statement/statement.html

We acknowledge that students, faculty, staff, and our broader community may need support or resources after this episode of targeted violence, and would like to offer:

Being a good ally requires us to make more than a statement. The Department of Theatre & Dance urges all members of our community to become active and stand with, support, and fight to end violence towards AAPI and women.

Black Lives Matter Statement 3/29/2021

The Faculty and Staff of the Department of Theatre & Dance apologize for being extremely late to state outright that Black Lives Matter. We take responsibility for not being at the forefront of this important discussion. We will do better.

Our privileged position as a group of predominantly white individuals who benefit from the hetero-patriarchal systems of white supremacy and anti-blackness has caused us to falter in taking full responsibility to speak out more quickly. We apologize for the harm this has caused to students in our Department and are committed to repairing this mistake.

We support Black Lives Matter. We unequivocally denounce anti-blackness and white supremacy. We condemn the devaluing of Black lives. We condemn the systemic brutality, violence, and racist policies that have taken the lives of countless Black individuals in our society. We acknowledge we cannot comprehend the suffering that 400 years of violence and oppression towards African American and Black people in the United States has caused these communities. We will move forward in solidarity to create a better future. The Department of Theatre & Dance sees, hears, and stands with students, artists, scholars, and members of the Black community, and their allies and will actively work in order to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusionary environment. We commit to work towards racial equity and restorative justice through our curricular content, productions, policies, and building an anti-racist Departmental culture.
