Mathematical Sciences Career Information

Careers in the mathematical sciences appear frequently at the top of surveys of the best-paying or most satisfying jobs. Statistics, operations research, and actuarial and information science are all fields that require a strong background in mathematics.  In addition, mathematics majors are frequently sought for non-mathematical positions, because employers recognize that the study of mathematics develops general skills such as problem-solving ability, organized thinking, clarity of expression and logical decision-making.

Many surveys show that New York, as well as most other states, is experiencing a shortage of qualified mathematics teachers.  This shortage is expected to continue for the forseeable future.  Thus, from an employment standpoint, this is an excellent time to be entering the teaching profession.

In addition, graduate schools actively recruit our majors. Graduates of our program have gone on to obtain advanced degrees at SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Buffalo, Clemson University, Dartmouth College, Emory University, the University of Georgia, Harvard University, the University of Kentucky, Pennsylvania State University, the University of North Carolina, the University of South Carolina, Syracuse University, and Western Michigan University, among others.
