Residence Life Student Recognition Programs
Established in 2003, the Student of the Month (SOM) Committee has been designed to recognize individual students for their achievements, both scholastic and co-curricular. The perennial plaques hung in the Office of Residence Life list the names of all SOM award winners from February 2003 to present. Student award recipients are honored with a certificate and invited to a luncheon in Cranston Marché. If you wish to nominate someone for Student of the Month, please fill out the nomination form.
Gabe Gonzalez, from Williamsville, New York has been named Student of the Month for April by the Office of Residence Life. Gabe was nominated for this award by Sue McNamara, from the Business department.
Gabe, an undergraduate student, is the president of Hall Council, a Work-Study student, a cashier at Lowe’s Home Improvement, a member of the ALD Honor Society, and an inductee of the Beta Gamma Sigma society.
Gabe contributes greatly to the Fredonia community through his innovative ideas. He is a member of the Enactus Mentoring team through which he participates in a program that he helped develop to mentor high school students during the pandemic. He worked on a team to pitch a solution for the Sustainability Development Goal on Workforce Development that won second place and is now being considered for future implementation by Enactus. Sue describes Gabe as some who “always participates in team bonding experiences” and states that he “will be going on the Enactus executive board next year as Innovations Lead.”
When asked about his favorite things about Fredonia, Gabe stated that it is “that it is a very small and inclusive community.” He continued, “[i]t’s easy to make friends with people and not only that, but the clubs here on campus offer a wide spectrum of opportunities. I am fortunate enough to have been introduced to Enactus which has already opened the door for me in terms of my community and myself. I see this as being a huge opportunity to not only help me grow as an individual but for me to give back to the community”
Gabe’s future goals include:
1. Creating an all-inclusive theater business
2. Marriage and creating a family
3. Commitment to improved physical health
4. Attaining financial stability
5. Getting a stable job
Resident Assistants are in the unique position to connect with our students on both a personal and professional level. RA of the Month recognizes these students who have gone above and beyond for their residents and fellow staff members while keeping the university's Baccalaureate Goals in mind. If you wish to nominate an RA, please fill out the nomination form.
At present, Program of the Month nominations can be submitted in 3 distinct categories: CAPE program, social justice program, and community builder program based around the Resident Assistant Programming Model. Programs will be evaluated by the committee and winners will be chosen every month. RA's will be notified of appropriate dates for submissions as well as the criteria evaluated on.
The Honors Student of the Month Program is a collaboration between the Honors Program and Honors House, which is part of the Office of Residence Life. This program is a wonderful addition to the Student of the Month Program, begun in Spring 2003 to recognize outstanding SUNY Fredonia students. This year, the Honors Student of the Month Committee will recognize students with accomplishments in one or more program pillars: Learn. Lead. Live. Nominations of students who embody or intentionally support our campus in honoring diversity, enhancing wellness, and promoting career-readiness are especially encouraged.
The student selected as the Honors Student of the Month will receive a gift card to the Bookstore and a certificate. In addition, the student’s name will be engraved on a plaque that will hang in the Office of Residence Life, and the student will have a biographical article published in the Campus Report.
To nominate a student, please fill out this nomination form.
