Graduate Degree Programs
The Master of Music in Music Education prepares students for higher levels of education and provides the academic qualifications required for Professional Teaching Certification in New York State. Final project options include thesis, performance recital or composition/arrangement.
This degree requires successful completion of either 30 or 36 semester hours of coursework. The 30-hour track requires a final project. The 36-hour track is available to practicing teachers and does not require a final project. Both tracks require comprehensive final examinations. Coursework is divided between music education, theory/history and elective courses.

The Master of Music in Music Education Studies program is intended for students who seek a graduate degree in Music Education but who do not intend to teach in public K-12 schools in the state of New York. The program leads to a Master's degree but does not lead to New York State teacher certification. It is ideal for out-of-state and international students.
The School of Music offers two tracks in the Music Education Studies Master of Music: the Final Project Program and the Educational Expertise Program. Each track consists of core curriculum required for all Master of Music degrees and additional requirements as accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
The Music Education MusB/MM program enables candidates to earn two separate degrees, the Bachelor of Music - Music Education and the Master of Music - Music Education, within as few as five years. Combined, these two music education degrees fulfill the academic requirements for New York Initial and Professional Certificates in Music Education. Candidates for this program attain admission to the Music Education Bachelor of Music degree program. Upon successful admission to Professional Standing and prior to beginning the student teaching semester, candidates in good standing may apply for the Music Education MusB/MM Program. Undergraduates accepted in the Music Education MusB/MM Program may begin graduate work during the senior year and complete the remaining requirements for the Master’s degree in as few as two semesters and one summer.
The Master of Music in Performance (possible tracks: Orchestral Instruments, Conducting, Piano, Collaborative Piano or Voice) requires at minimum successful completion of 30 semester hours of coursework (Orchestral Instruments, Conducting & Piano tracks) or 34 semester hours of coursework (voice track), which is divided between performance training, theory/history and elective courses. A comprehensive oral examination and performance culminate the program.
The Master of Music in Performance - Collaborative Piano Track is an intensive program for pianists interested in developing an expertise in the vocal and instrumental collaborative repertoire. The program's 38 hours of coursework includes courses in lyric diction, song literature, opera coaching, and instrumental chamber music as well as history and theory. The degree culminates in a recital and comprehensive oral exam.

The Master of Music in Theory/Composition requires a concentration in either theory or composition. This degree requires successful completion of 30 hours of coursework, which is divided between theory or composition courses, as well as history and studio instruction and electives. A thesis (theory project or composition) and comprehensive oral examination are required.

The Master of Music in Music Therapy program requires completion of 48 credit hours of graduate-level courses. This includes the core music graduate curriculum, core music therapy courses including mental health courses (Psychopathology and Developmental Psychology) and graduate music education courses (Psychology of Music, Psychological Research in Music and Thesis/Final Project). The program is designed with the needs of full-time working music therapists in mind and may be pursued on a part-time basis. The Master of Music in Music Therapy program has been approved as licensed-designated by the New York State Education Department, is approved by the American Music Association, and accredited by the National Association for Schools of Music.
